“Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.” (1 Sam 3:10)

Passage

(Samuel was dedicated to the service of the LORD when he was born by his mother, Hannah. From the age of 3, he lived at the tent-shrine of the Ark of the Covenant at Shiloh. He served the priest of the LORD, Eli.)

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.

At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. Then the LORD called. “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. The LORD called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. The LORD called Samuel , a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ’Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening.” …As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the LORD. (NRSV)

Questions

1. Q: What was the Ark of the Covenant? A: It was a rectangular wooden box and lid, covered in gold with two angels on the lid also in gold. The angels faced each other. The space between the angels wings was called “the Mercy Seat” because that was where the LORD was present. The Ark had two long rails on each side so that it could be carried from place to place. Q: What was inside the Ark? A: The two stone tablets with the 10 commandments given by God to Moses. Q: What was the Tent of Meeting? A: The Tent of Meeting was a large tent with two rooms, to house the Ark, and the lamp (or Menorah) and two altars.

2. Q: In this passage where is the Tent/shrine and the Ark? A: In Shiloh in the land of Canaan. Q: Who is the priest at the Tent of Meeting? A: Eli. Q: Why is the boy Samuel at the Tent of Meeting in Shiloh? A: He is serving the priest Eli. Q Where is Samuel sleeping? A: In front of the Ark.

3. Q: What happens while he is sleeping? A: He hears someone calling his name. Q: What does Samuel do three times? A: He runs to Eli and says, “Here I am, for you called me.” Q: Who was really calling the boy Samuel? A: God. Q: What does Eli tell Samuel to say if God calls him again? A: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

4. Samuel grew up to be a very great prophet, judge and leader of the Israelite people. We do not all get a call from God in the night, but God does have ways to speak to us. Q: Can you think of a way that God speaks to us today? A: Answers will vary. God speaks to us through reading the Bible, through the readings at Mass, through other persons of faith and especially in our hearts and minds when we are at prayer before the Tabernacle at church .

Samuel creció; el Señor estaba con él, y no dejó que cayera por tierra ninguna de sus palabras.
Todo Israel, desde Dan hasta Berseba, supo que Samuel estaba acreditado como profeta del Señor.
El Señor continuó apareciéndose en Silo, porque era allí donde él se revelaba a Samuel.
