Passage

(The prophet Elijah spoke for God in the Northern Kingdom of Israel —by his time the kingdom of David and Solomon had split in two—under a wicked king named Ahab and his wife Jezebel, who were trying to kill Elijah. In this passage he is fleeing for his life)

But he himself went a days journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of the LORD came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.” He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there….

Then the word of the LORD came to him saying,….”Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. (the Orthodox Jewish Bible translates this line, “a quiet gentle voice”.) When Elijah heard it he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave… (1 Kings 19:4-8, 9a, 11-13a, 16b, 19-21 NRSV)

1. Q: Why did the prophet Elijah go a days journey into the wilderness? To escape from King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Q: He had been “zealous for the LORD” and now he was on the run, alone and without food. How did he feel now? A: He wanted to die. Q: What did he ask the LORD for in his prayer? A: “Take away my life.” Q: What did he do next? A He lay down and slept under a single broom tree.

2. Q: Who touches him and wakes him? A An angel. Q: What has the angel brought? A: Food and water. Q: After Elijah goes back to sleep, what does the angel do? A: Wakes him up and gives him more food and water again.

3. Q: What does Elijah do after he has slept, eaten and drank? A: He goes on a forty days journey to Mt. Horeb.
Q: What is the other name for Mt. Horeb? A: Mt. Sinai, Q: Who else went to Mt. Horeb? A: The prophet Moses.
Q: Do you remember from the Family Bible Challenge season on Covenant what happened at Horeb/Sinai?
A: God made a covenant with the Israelites there, making them “his chosen people” and he gave them the Ten Commandments

4. Q: Does God speak to Elijah at Horeb like he did to Moses? A: Yes. Q: Is God’s voice like thunder, lightning or earthquake? A: No. Q: How does God’s voice seem to Elijah? A: Like a gentle quiet voice or sheer silence. Q: Why does Elijah wrap his face in his mantle (or cloak)? A. Answers will vary. He is in awe of the presence of God and is afraid to look at him, perhaps.

5. In the history of Israel many prophets faithful to God were persecuted. It was difficult to be a prophet and have to call the people out for their sin or report warnings from God. Q: Are we ever called upon to speak up for God in our lives? A: Answers will vary. Q: Is it scary to speak up for what is right and good? A: Answers will vary.

6. The Church today and historically does not designate anyone as prophet, but there certainly have been many voices “speaking for” God in the history of Christianity. Q: Can you think of any? A: Answers will vary. Pope St. John Paul II, St. Catherine of Sina., St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Teresa of Calcutta are just some examples.

Luego caminó un día entero por el desierto, y al final se sentó bajo una retama. Entonces se deseó la muerte y exclamó: «¡Basta ya, Señor! ¡Quítame la vida, porque yo no valgo más que mis padres!».

Se acostó y se quedó dormido bajo la retama. Pero un ángel lo tocó y le dijo: «¡Levántate, come!».
El miró y vio que había a su cabecera una galleta cocida sobre piedras calientes y un jarro de agua. Comió, bebió y se acostó de nuevo.
Pero el Ángel del Señor volvió otra vez, lo tocó y le dijo: «¡Levántate, come, porque todavía te queda mucho por caminar!».
Elías se levantó, comió y bebió, y fortalecido por ese alimento caminó cuarenta días y cuarenta noches hasta la montaña de Dios, el Horeb.
Allí, entró en la gruta y pasó la noche. Entonces le fue dirigida la palabra del Señor.
El Señor le dijo: «¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?». El respondió: «Me consumo de celo por el Señor, el Dios de los ejércitos, porque los israelitas abandonaron tu alianza, derribaron tus altares y mataron a tus profetas con la espada. He quedado yo solo y tratan de quitarme la vida».
El Señor le dijo: «Sal y quédate de pie en la montaña, delante del Señor». Y en ese momento el Señor pasaba. Sopló un viento huracanado que partía las montañas y resquebrajaba las rocas delante del Señor. Pero el Señor no estaba en el viento. Después del viento, hubo un terremoto. Pero el Señor no estaba en el terremoto.

Después del terremoto, se encendió un fuego. Pero el Señor no estaba en el fuego. Después del fuego, se oyó el rumor de una brisa suave.
Al oírla, Elías se cubrió el rostro con su manto, salió y se quedó de pie a la entrada de la gruta.
Elías partió de allí y encontró a Eliseo, hijo de Safat, que estaba arando. Delante de él había doce yuntas de bueyes, y él iba con la última. Elías pasó cerca de él y le echó encima su manto.
Eliseo dejó sus bueyes, corrió detrás de Elías y dijo: «Déjame besar a mi padre y a mi madre; luego te seguiré». Elías le respondió: «Sí, puedes ir. ¿Qué hice yo para impedírtelo?»
