Week Seven: St. John the Baptist

Passage
(The father of John the Baptist was the priest Zechariah. He and his wife Elizabeth were childless, considered punishment by God for sin in ancient Israel. One day, while serving in the Temple, an angel appeared to Zechariah who told him that his prayer would be answered and he would have a son. Zechariah did not believe the angel. So they angel told him he would become unable to speak until the child was born. He also told him to name the child John)
Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.
On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said, “No; he is to be called John.” They said to her, “None of your relatives has this name.” Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. Fear came over all their neighbors, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. All who heard them pondered them and said, “What then will this child become?” For indeed the hand of the Lord was with him.
Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy:
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has looked favorably on his people
and redeemed them….
And you, child, will be called the prophet
of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to
to prepare his ways,
to give knowledge of his salvation to his people
by the forgiveness of their sins.
By the tender mercy of our God,
the dawn from on high will break upon us,
to give light to those who sit in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.
So the child grew and became strong in the spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.
(Later Jesus spoke about John the Baptist after John had been imprisoned by Herod Antipas:)
As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go in the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written,
‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’
Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he… For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John came; and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.”
Questions
1. Q: Who were the parents of John the Baptist? A: Elizabeth, a relative of the Virgin Mary, and Zechariah, a member of a priestly clan. Q: What happened when Zechariah wrote, “He shall be called John.”? A: Zechariah became able to speak again. A: Why were the neighbors afraid? Q: Because they had just witnessed a miracle which indicated the power and presence of God. Q: What did the neighbors wonder about? A: What would baby John become, because it was obvious “the hand of the Lord was upon him”.
2. Q: As he holds his infant son, what prophecy does Zechariah speak to him under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit? A: That John would be called a prophet of God, the Most High. Q: What will John’s role as prophet be? A: To go before the Lord and prepare his ways, and to give knowledge of his salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins.
3. Q: Where did John the Baptist live once he became an adult? A: In the wilderness. The wilderness in Israel is not a forest such as we have in the US. The Judean wilderness, is dry, hilly, uncultivated land, with little vegetation, where no one lives. Somewhat desert like. Wild animal live there. Jesus at the beginning of his public ministry spoke to the crowds about John. Q: What question did Jesus repeatedly ask them? A: “What did you go out to see?” Q: Why did did he ask that? A: It appears that John was the subject of great curiosity because he was living isolated from society in a difficult place, like a hermit. Q: Why does Jesus mention “soft robes”. A: Again it appears that part of the curiosity involved John’s clothing which was made of animal skins. (Mt 3:4) Perhaps people were critical of him and thought he was weird.
4. Q: How does Jesus affirm John’s prophetic role? A: Jesus quotes the Old Testament prophet, Malachi, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.” Thus he affirms that John is the fulfillment of God’s promise to Malachi. Q: According to Jesus, who is the greatest prophet up to his day? A: John the Baptist! Q: Why does he say John is Elijah to come? A: For two reasons: 1) Elijah never died in the Old Testament, he went up to heaven in a vision of a fiery chariot; and 2) for this reason, the scribes in Jesus’ day were teaching that Elijah must come back down out of the heavens. In other words, Jesus is saying that John the Baptist is the new Elijah.
5) As we close our seven week Bible study on the Prophets, let’s go back to the beginning. Q: What is a prophet? A: A person who speaks for God under the influence of God’s Holy Spirit. He or she is an intermediary between God and humans leading them away from sinful or unloving behavior and towards right relationship with God. Q: Do you know that on the day of your Baptism, you were anointed with holy oils, called chrism? Do you know that that anointing made you “priest, prophet and king”(Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 905)? A: Yes or no. Q? Can you be a prophet like Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel or John the Baptist in your own way? A: We lay people act as prophets when we speak the Truth, and live the Gospel by example before our families, neighbors and co-workers. Our mission as prophets is accomplished in the ordinary circumstances of the world. (Lumen Gentium 35)

Ellos le decían: «No hay nadie en tu familia que lleve ese nombre». Entonces preguntaron por señas al padre qué nombre quería que le pusieran. Este pidió una pizarra y escribió: «Su nombre es Juan». Todos quedaron admirados. Y en ese mismo momento, Zacarías recuperó el habla y comenzó a alabar a Dios. Este acontecimiento produjo una gran impresión entre la gente de los alrededores, y se lo comentaba en toda la región montañosa de Judea. Todos los que se enteraron guardaban este recuerdo en su corazón y se decían: «¿Qué llegará a ser este niño?». Porque la mano del Señor estaba con él.
Entonces Zacarías, su padre, quedó lleno del Espíritu Santo y dijo proféticamente:
«Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de Israel,
porque ha visitado y redimido a su Pueblo,
Y tú, niño, serás llamado Profeta del Altísimo,
porque irás delante del Señor preparando sus caminos,
para hacer conocer a su Pueblo la salvación
mediante el perdón de los pecados;
gracias a la misericordiosa ternura de nuestro Dios,
que nos traerá del cielo la visita del Sol naciente,

(Más tarde, Jesús habló de Juan Bautista después de que éste fuera encarcelado por Herodes Antipas:)
Mientras los enviados de Juan se retiraban, Jesús empezó a hablar de él a la multitud, diciendo: «¿Qué fueron a ver al desierto? ¿Una caña agitada por el viento?
¿Qué fueron a ver? ¿Un hombre vestido con refinamiento? Los que se visten de esa manera viven en los palacios de los reyes.
¿Qué fueron a ver entonces? ¿Un profeta? Les aseguro que sí, y más que un profeta. Él es aquel de quien está escrito:
“Yo envío a mi mensajero delante de ti, para prepararte el camino”.
Les aseguro que no ha nacido ningún hombre más grande que Juan el Bautista; y sin embargo, el más pequeño en el Reino de los Cielos es más grande que él… Porque todos los Profetas, lo mismo que la Ley, han profetizado hasta Juan.

1. P: ¿Quiénes fueron los padres de Juan Bautista? R: Isabel, pariente de la Virgen María, y Zacarías, miembro de un clan sacerdotal. P: ¿Qué ocurrió cuando Zacarías escribió: “Su nombre es Juan”? R: Zacarías volvió a ser capaz de hablar. R: ¿Por qué tenían miedo los vecinos? P: Debido a que acababan de presenciar un milagro que indicaba el poder y la presencia de Dios. P: ¿Qué se preguntaron los vecinos? R: En qué se convertiría el bebé Juan, debido a que era evidente que “la mano del Señor estaba con él”.
2. P: Mientras sostiene a su hijo pequeño, ¿qué profecía le dice Zacarías bajo la inspiración del Espíritu Santo? R: Que Juan sería llamado profeta de Dios, el Altísimo. P: ¿Cuál será la función de Juan como profeta? R: Ir delante del Señor y preparar sus caminos, y dar a conocer su salvación a su pueblo mediante el perdón de sus pecados.
3. P: ¿Dónde vivió Juan Bautista una vez que se hizo adulto? R: En el desierto. El desierto en Israel no es un bosque tal como el que tenemos en los Estados Unidos. El desierto de Judea, es una tierra seca, montañosa, sin cultivar, con poca vegetación, donde no vive nadie. Algo desértico. Allí viven animales salvajes. Al principio de su ministerio público, Jesús habló a las multitudes sobre Juan. P: ¿Qué pregunta les hizo Jesús repetidamente? R: “¿Qué fueron a ver entonces?” P: ¿Por qué preguntó eso? R: Parece que Juan era objeto de gran curiosidad debido a que vivía aislado de la sociedad en un lugar difícil, como un ermitaño. P: ¿Por qué menciona Jesús al que “viste con refinamiento”? R: De nuevo parece que parte de la curiosidad tenía que ver con la vestimenta de Juan, que estaba hecha de pelos de camello. (Mt 3:4) Quizá la gente lo criticaba y pensaba que era raro.
4. P: ¿Cómo afirma Jesús la función profética de Juan? R: Jesús cita al profeta del Antiguo Testamento, Malaquías: “Yo envío a mi mensajero, para que prepare el camino delante de mí”. Así, afirma que Juan es el cumplimiento de la promesa de Dios a Malaquías. P: Según Jesús, ¿quién es el mayor profeta hasta la fecha? R: ¡Juan Bautista! P: ¿Por qué dice que Juan es el Elías que va a venir? R: Por dos razones: 1) Elías nunca murió en el Antiguo Testamento, sino que subió al cielo en una visión de un carro de fuego; y 2) por esta razón, los escribas de la época de Jesús enseñaban que Elías debía volver a bajar de los cielos. En otras palabras, Jesús está diciendo que Juan Bautista es el nuevo Elías.
5) Al cerrar nuestro estudio bíblico de siete semanas sobre los Profetas, volvamos al principio. P: ¿Qué es un profeta? R: Una persona que habla por Dios bajo la influencia del Espíritu Santo de Dios. Es un intermediario entre Dios y los seres humanos que los aleja del comportamiento pecaminoso o carente de amor y los conduce hacia una relación correcta con Dios. P: ¿Sabes que el día de tu Bautismo fuiste ungido con los santos óleos, llamados crisma? ¿Sabes que esa unción te hizo a ti “Sacerdote, Profeta y Rey” (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, párrafo 897)? R: Sí o no. P: ¿Puedes ser un profeta como Moisés, Samuel, Elías, Isaías, Jeremías, Ezequiel o Juan Bautista a tu manera? R: Los laicos actuamos como profetas cuando decimos la Verdad y vivimos el Evangelio con el ejemplo ante nuestras familias, vecinos y compañeros de trabajo. Nuestra misión como profetas se cumple en las circunstancias ordinarias del mundo. (Lumen Gentium 35)
