Week Five: Jeremiah

Verse to memorize

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…” (Jeremiah 1:4)

Passage

(The prophet Jeremiah lived during the last years of the kingdom of Judah, before it fell to the Babylonians. He was of a priestly family.)

Now the word of the LORD came to me saying,

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.” But the LORD said to me,

“Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’;
for you shall go to all to whom I send you,
and you shall speak whatever I command you.
Do not be afraid of them,
For I am with you to deliver you,
says the LORD.”

Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me,

“Now I have put my words in your mouth…
But you, gird up you loins; stand up and tell them everything that I command you.
Do not break down before them, or I will break you before them. And I for my part
have made you today a fortified city, an iron pillar, and a bronze wall, against the
whole land—against the kings of Judah, its princes, its priests, and the people of
the land. They will fight against you; but they shall not prevail against you, for I am
with you, says the LORD, to deliver you. (NRSV)

Meditation Questions:

1. God’s words to Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…”, are some of the most beautiful and most intimate words in the whole Bible! This is how God the Father called Jeremiah to be his prophet. Q: Why does this statement ring in peoples hearts? A: Because God knows every one of us before he formed us in the womb. He knows us better than we know ourselves! Q: How do you think young Jeremiah must have felt hearing these words? A: Answers will vary. Q: What kind of a prophet did God want Jeremiah to be? A: A prophet to the nations! Jeremiah’s country, Judah, was a tiny kingdom surrounded by larger and powerful nations. Q: How did Jeremiah respond to the LORD? A: “Ah, LORD, I don’t know how to speak. I am only a boy.” Q: Jeremiah was reluctant. Which other prophet we have studied made excuses to the LORD? A: Moses.

2. First God spoke strongly to Jeremiah: “Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak wherever I command you..” Q: How does God strengthen young Jeremiah? A: God promised to be with him to deliver him. Q: What other command does he give him? A: Not to be afraid of the people.

3. Q: What did God do next to Jeremiah? A: He touched his mouth. Q: And what did God tell Jeremiah? A: “Now I have put my words into your mouth.” Q: To which other prophet did God say, “I will be with your mouth.”? A: Moses.

4. Q: What does “Gird up your loins” mean? A: In the time of Jeremiah and also the time of Jesus, men wore long robes. When they needed to work or to run, they took a belt and hoisted up the lower part of their robe. Your loins were your thighs. Q: What was the next tough command God gave to Jeremiah? A: “Do not break down before them or I will break you before them!” Do you see how tough it was to be God’s prophet? Q: Which prophet told God he wanted to die? A: Elijah in the wilderness. Q: BUT….what did God do for Jeremiah on the day of his call to prepare him for this difficult ministry? A: Using metaphors for strength, God said, “I for my part have made you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall.” Q: Does God strengthen us? A: Yes, if we ask him for strength in prayer. The martyrs were “fortified cities, iron pillars and bronze walls” for the Lord.

5. Q: What prediction does God make about Jeremiah’s future role as prophet to the nations? A: They will fight against him but they will not prevail. Q: What does “prevail’ mean? A: Win. Q: What other promise of God appears in every book of the Bible? A: “Fear not, I am with you.”

«No digas: «Soy demasiado joven»,
porque tú irás adonde yo te envíe
y dirás todo lo que yo te ordene.
No temas delante de ellos,
porque yo estoy contigo para librarte
–oráculo del Señor –».

El Señor extendió su mano, tocó mi boca y me dijo:

«Yo pongo mis palabras en tu boca.
En cuanto a ti, cíñete la cintura, levántate y diles todo lo que yo te ordene.
No te dejes intimidar por ellos, no sea que te intimide yo delante de ellos.
Mira que hoy hago de ti una plaza fuerte, una columna de hierro, una muralla de bronce,
frente a todo el país: frente a los reyes de Judá y a sus jefes, a sus sacerdotes y al pueblo del país.
Ellos combatirán contra ti, pero no te derrotarán,
porque yo estoy contigo para librarte –oráculo del Señor –».

1. Las palabras de Dios a Jeremías: “Antes de formarte en el vientre materno, yo te conocía…”, ¡son algunas de las más bellas e íntimas de toda la Biblia! Así es como Dios Padre llamó a Jeremías para que fuera su profeta. P: ¿Por qué esta expresión suena en los corazones de la gente? R: Porque Dios conoce a cada uno de nosotros antes de formarnos en el vientre materno. ¡Él nos conoce mejor que nosotros mismos! R: “No te dejes intimidar por ellos, no sea que te intimide yo delante de ellos”. ¿Ves lo duro que era ser el profeta de Dios? P: ¿Qué profeta le dijo a Dios que quería morir? R: Elías en el desierto. P: PERO… ¿Qué hizo Dios por Jeremías el día de su llamada para prepararlo para este difícil ministerio?
