Week Seven Reflection: The Jailer of Philippi
The Jailer of Philippi–Acts of the Apostles 16:25-40

Passage
(After casting out a demon from a fortune-telling slave girl in Philippi, St. Paul was falsely accused by her owners and the magistrates ordered that Paul and his disciple Silas be beaten and thrown in jail.)
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was an earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone ‘s chains were unfastened. When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted in a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them outside and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They answered, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God.
When morning came, the magistrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.” And the jailer reported the message to Paul, saying, “The magistrates sent word to let you go; therefore come out now and go in peace.” But Paul replied, “They have beaten us in public, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and now are they going to discharge us in secret? Certainly not! Let them come and take us out them-selves.” The police reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens; so they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city. After leaving the prison they went to Lydia ‘s home; and when they had seen and encouraged the brothers and sisters there, they departed.

1. Q: We learned about St. Paul in FBC-Week Five. So who is Silas? A: He was one of St. Paul ‘s disciples who traveled with him on some of his missionary journeys. Q: Where is Philippi? A: At the top of the Aegean Sea, in NE Greece. Q: In this story, how did Paul and Silas land in jail? A: They were falsely accused by the owners of a slave girl after casting our a demon from her. The owners were mad because they earned money from her demonic powers.
2. Q: While in jail, what did Paul and Silas do to keep up their spirits? A: They prayed and sang hymns; the other prisoners were listening to them. Q: Why did the prison doors suddenly swing open that night? A: There was a violent earthquake. Q: When the jailer saw that the doors were wide open, what did he do? A: He was about to kill himself with a sword. Q: Why? A: Because He assumed that all the prisoners had escaped. And secondly, in the
Roman Empire, if a jailer let the prisoners escape, he could be executed.
3. Q: How did Paul save the jailer from suicide? A: He shouted, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” Q: How did the jailer respond to Paul ‘s kindness? A: He fell at the feet of Paul and Silas and said, “What must I do to be saved?” Q: What was Paul ‘s answer? A: Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your house-hold.” And Paul preached to them.
4. Q: Finally what did the Jailer do? A: He brought them upstairs into his home, washed their wounds and fed them. Then the jailer and his whole household were baptize. Q: What kind of a conversion story is this? A: Faith through the agency of Paul ‘s example and Paul ‘s kindness and concern for the jailer. Also, the miracle of the earthquake causing the jail ‘s doors to open.
5. We have been reading conversion stories that happened 2,000 years ago. Q: Do you know anyone who has had a conversion experience in our day?

(Después de expulsar un demonio de una muchacha poseída de un espíritu de adivinación en Filipos, San Pablo fue falsamente acusado por sus patrones… y los magistrados ordenaron que Pablo y Silas fueran azotados y encarcelados).
Cerca de la medianoche, Pablo y Silas oraban y cantaban alabanzas de Dios, mientras los otros prisioneros los escuchaban.
De pronto, la tierra comenzó a temblar tan violentamente que se conmovieron los cimientos de la cárcel, y en un instante, todas las puertas se abrieron y las cadenas de los prisioneros se soltaron.
El carcelero se despertó sobresaltado y, al ver abiertas las puertas de la prisión, desenvainó su espada con la intención de matarse, creyendo que los prisioneros se habían escapado.
Pero Pablo le gritó: “No te hagas ningún mal, estamos todos aquí”.
El carcelero pidió unas antorchas, entró precipitadamente en la celda y, temblando, se echó a los pies de Pablo y de Silas.
Luego los hizo salir y les preguntó: “Señores, ¿qué debo hacer para alcanzar la salvación?”.
Ellos le respondieron: “Cree en el Señor Jesús y te salvarás, tú y toda tu familia”.
En seguida le anunciaron la Palabra del Señor, a él y a todos los de su casa.
A esa misma hora de la noche, el carcelero los atendió y curó sus llagas. Inmediatamente después, fue bautizado junto con toda su familia.
Luego los hizo subir a su casa y preparó la mesa para festejar con los suyos la alegría de haber creído en Dios.
Cuando amaneció, los magistrados enviaron a los inspectores para que dijeran al carcelero: “Deja en libertad a esos hombres”.
El carcelero comunicó entonces a Pablo: “Los magistrados me mandan decir que los deje en libertad; por lo tanto, salgan y vayan en paz”.
Pero Pablo respondió a los inspectores: “Ellos nos hicieron azotar públicamente sin juicio previo, a nosotros que somos ciudadanos romanos, y nos pusieron en la cárcel. ¡Y ahora nos quieren hacer salir a escondidas! ¡De ninguna manera! Que vengan ellos en persona a dejarnos en libertad”.
Los inspectores repitieron estas palabras a los magistrados; estos, al enterarse de que eran ciudadanos romanos, se asustaron y fueron a tratar amigablemente con ellos. Luego los pusieron en libertad y los invitaron a alejarse de la ciudad.
Cuando salieron de la prisión, Pablo y Silas fueron a la casa de Lidia, donde volvieron a ver a los hermanos y los exhortaron. Después partieron
