“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” (Acts 7:59)

Passage

[Stephen said] “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always oppose the Holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors. Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become. You received the law as transmitted by angels, but you did not observe it.”

When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him. But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together. They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them”; and when he said this, he fell asleep. (Acts 7:51-60)

Questions

1. St. Stephen was the first martyr, stoned to death because he spoke truth to a “stiff-necked” people in Jerusalem who did not believe the Gospel. Imagine that you are Stephen. How did he feel as he spoke to the crowd, then as they dragged him out of the city?

2. What do you think it means to be “filled with the Holy Spirit”? Have you ever felt a sense of complete peace and joy even in a very difficult situation? Talk to your family about that experience and consider sharing it with others, too.

3. What allows Stephen to pray, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” Truly this is a living out of the words of Jesus to pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44). Is there someone in your life who has been giving you a hard time? Commit to praying for that person this week.

Preguntas para reflexionar:

1. San Esteban fue el primer mártir en ser apedreado a muerte por hablar la Verdad a un grupo de “tercos” en Jerusalén, que no creían en el Evangelio. Imagina que tú eres Esteban. ¿Cómo se sentiría él al hablarle a aquel grupo de gente, y después al ser arrastrado fuera de la ciudad?

2. ¿Qué crees que significa el “estar lleno del Espíritu Santo”? ¿Alguna vez te has sentido en total paz y gozo, aún en las situaciones difíciles de la vida? Comparte esa experiencia con tu familia, o considera compartirla con tus amistades o tu comunidad.

3. Qué le permite a Esteban clamar en gran voz: “Señor no les tomes en cuenta este pecado.” Esto es verdaderamente vivir la Palabra de Cristo – orar por aquellos que nos persiguen (Mt. 5, 44). ¿Hay alguien en tu vida que te ha estado haciendo las cosas difíciles? Haz un compromiso de orar por esa persona durante esta semana.
