Week Two: Parable of the Sower Mk 4:1-20

Verse to memorize

“To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God…”

Passage

Again (Jesus) began to teach beside the sea. Such a very large crowd gathered that He got into a boat on the sea and sat there, while the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. He began to teach them many things in parables, and in His teaching He said to them: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was scorched; and since it had no root, it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold. And He said, “Let anyone with ears to hear listen!”

When He was alone, those who were around Him along with the twelve asked Him about the parables. And He said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables; in order that

‘they may indeed look, but not perceive, and may indeed listen, but not understand; so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.'”

And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables? The sower sows the word. These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy. But they have no root, and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. And others are those sown among the thorns: these are the ones who hear the word, but the cares of the world, and the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it yields nothing. And these are the ones sown on the good soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.” (NRSV)

Meditation Questions:

1.) Q: What is the location of this preaching by Jesus? A: Beside the Sea of Galilee, in the north of Palestine where Jesus grew up. Q: Who is His audience? A: A large crowd of Galileans – so likely the common people who had heard of the miracles and the compassion of Jesus. Q: Who else was there? A: The Twelve (apostles). Q: How big was the crowd? A: So big that Jesus had no room on the shore and had to get into a boat to speak to them.

2.) This parable has two audiences. First the large crowd and later when Jesus is alone, a smaller audience. Q: Who is the smaller audience? A: “Those who were with Him”, so the group of disciples who traveled with Our Lord. Q: And who else? A: The Twelve, also known as apostles in Luke’s gospel. They were the inner circle of Jesus’ disciples.

3.) Q: Did Jesus’ own followers, the disciples, understand the hidden meaning of the Parable of the Sower? A: No. So he explained it to them. Jesus Himself breaks open the parable and gives His disciples the comparison points.

4) According to Jesus, who is the sower? A: God. Q: What is the seed? A: the Word or teaching of God.
The “seed” falls on different types of soil. Q: Who are the different types of ground? A: The persons who hear the Word. Q: Which persons are like the trodden path? A: Persons for whom the Word of God gets stolen by the distractions and temptations of Satan, the Spirit of Evil. Q: Which persons are like the rocky ground? A: Persons who hear the Word, receive it with joy, but when trouble or persecutions come, they fall away from the faith. Q: Which persons are like the soil with thorns growing? A: Persons who hear the word, but allow worries, the desire for money and other things to choke out the power of the Word in their hearts. Q: Which persons are like the good soil? A: Persons who hear the Word of God, accept it and “bear fruit” in the world for God; that is, they do good by their actions for God and for others in the world. The Word, like wheat sheaves, spreads all over the world through these good people.

4.) Q: Why does Jesus say to his disciples, “To you has been given the secret (or the mystery) of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables…”? A: Answers will vary. Every where Jesus taught, he was opposed by the religious and political leaders of His day. Yet He knew what was in the hearts of every person he spoke to. He knew that the large crowds of the common people were attracted by His compassion and His healings. But He knew further that many would not be attracted by His more difficult teachings; for example, “Give what you have to the poor and come follow Me”, and throwing the money changers and animal sellers out of the Temple. These people are “those outside”. He taught them things hidden in stories, because stories live on. Years later, many would remember the stories and aided by the Holy Spirit, they would come to understanding and faith. For Jesus personally, His truth is dangerous. It will eventually get Him killed. To the disciples, (as to us!) is given the gift of faith in the mystery of God’s invisible kingdom on earth right now and later in eternal life.

5.) Q: Why does Jesus quote a short passage of poetry from the prophet Isaiah (6:9-10), “That they may indeed look, but not perceive, and may indeed listen, but not understand; so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.”? Does He not intend that they come to faith and forgiveness?? A: This often misunderstood verse is an example of a fulfillment quotation from the Hebrew Bible. In other words, just as God promised Isaiah he would be misunderstood in his day, so Jesus is misunderstood by most in His day. God has given all of us the freedom to turn away from Him and lose His forgiveness. Jesus weeps about this in the Gospels.

6.) Q: Which kind of soil will you be for God’s Word? Will you let temptations to sin, distractions, worries, troubles, persecutions, or desires for money and things pull you away from following Jesus? Q: What help can we ask for when these things come? A: We pray for God’s grace and strength.

R: Las respuestas van a variar.
