Week #5 Reflection: Psalm 91
Verse to memorize
“My refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.”
Passage
I
v.1 You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shelter of the Almighty,
v. 2 Say to the LORD, “My refuge and fortress,
my God in whom I trust.”
v. 3 He will rescue you from the fowler’s snare,
from the destroying plague,
v. 4 He will shelter you with his pinions,
and under his wings you may take refuge;
his faithfulness is a protecting shield.
v. 5 You shall not fear the terror of the night
nor the arrow that flies by day,
v. 6 Nor the pestilence that roams in darkness
nor the plague that ravishes at noon.
v. 7 Though a thousand fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
near you it shall not come.
v. 8 You need simply watch;
the punishment of the wicked you will see.
v. 9 Because you have the LORD for your refuge
and have made the Most High your stronghold,
v. 10 No evil shall befall you,
no affliction come near your tent.
v. 11 For he commands his angels with regard to you,
to guard you wherever you go.
v. 12 With their hands they shall support you,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
v. 13 You can tread upon the asp and the viper,
trample the lion and the dragon.

v. 14 “Because he clings to me I will deliver him;
because he knows my name I will set him on high.
v. 15 He will call upon me and I will answer;
I will be with him in distress;
I will deliver him and give him honor.
v. 16 With length of days I will satisfy him,
and fill him with my saving power.”
Questions
1. What type of psalm is this one? A lament, a hymn of praise or a wisdom psalm?
If you said “praise”, you are generally correct. But there is a subset of psalms of praise called psalms of trust. This is a beautiful example of a psalm of trust.
2. In Part I, the psalmist is likely speaking to a congregation in the Temple (“You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High”). He is teaching them to pray words of trust to God. What are some of the things that he says God will do for us, when we trust him, in verses 3, 4 & 10?
3. In the holiest part of the Temple, there were two golden angel statues with outstretched wings or “pinions” symbolizing God’s protection. Angels are mentioned in every book of the Bible. In Ps 91, we find an early proof that we have Guardian Angels. Can you find the 2 verses?
4. In Part II, a new person speaks in the first person, saying, “I will deliver him”, “I will set him on high”, “I will answer him”, “I will fill him with my saving power”.
Who is that person?
5. Sometimes God speaks in the psalms and especially in the prophets. We call God’s speech an oracle. In vs. 14-16, what are some of the very powerful promises God makes directly to us?

Vers. 4 te cubrirá con sus plumas, y hallarás un refugio bajo sus alas, su brazo es escudo y coraza.
Vers. 5 No temerás los terrores de la noche, ni la flecha que vuela de día,

Vers. 7 Aunque caigan mil a tu izquierda y diez mil a tu derecha, tú no serás alcanzado:

Vers. 14 “El se entregó a mí, por eso, yo lo glorificaré; lo protegeré, porque conoce mi Nombre;
Vers. 15 me invocará, y yo le responderé. Estará con él en el peligro, lo defenderé y lo glorificaré;
Vers. 16 le haré gozar de una larga vida y le haré ver mi salvación”.
Preguntas para reflexionar:
1. ¿Qué tipo de salmo es éste? ¿Una lamentación, un himno de alabanza o un salmo de sabiduría? Si dijiste de “alabanza”, generalmente estás en lo correcto. Pero hay un subconjunto de salmos de alabanza llamados salmos de confianza. Este es un hermoso ejemplo de un salmo de confianza.
2. En la primera parte, el salmista probablemente habla a una congregación en el templo (“Tú que vives al amparo del Altísimo”). Les está enseñando a orar palabras de confianza a Dios. ¿Cuáles son algunas de las cosas que dice que Dios hará por nosotros, cuando confiamos en él, en los versículos 3, 4 y 10?
3. En la parte más sagrada del Templo, había dos estatuas de ángeles de oro con alas extendidas que simbolizaban la protección de Dios. Los ángeles se mencionan en todos los libros de la Biblia. En el Salmo 91, encontramos una prueba antigua de que tenemos ángeles de la guarda. ¿Puedes encontrar los dos versículos?
4. En la segunda parte, una nueva persona habla en primera persona, diciendo: “Yo lo defenderé”, “Yo le haré ver mi salvación”, “Yo le responderé”, “Yo lo glorificaré”. ¿Quién es esa persona?
5. A veces Dios habla en los salmos y especialmente en los profetas. Llamamos “oráculo” al discurso de Dios. En los versículos 14-16, ¿cuáles son algunas de las poderosas promesas que Dios nos hace directamente?
