Week #4 Reflection: Psalm 51

“A clean heart create for me, O God; renew within me a steadfast spirit.”
Passage
I
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;
in your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions.
Thoroughly wash away my guilt;
and from my sin cleanse me.
For I know my transgressions;
my sin is always before me.
Against you, you alone have I sinned;
I have done what is evil in your eyes
So that you are just in your word,
and without reproach in your judgment.
Behold, you desire true sincerity;
and secretly you teach me wisdom.
Cleanse me with hyssop, that I may be pure;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
You will let me hear gladness and joy;
the bones you have crushed will rejoice.

Turn away your face from my sins;
blot out all my iniquities.
A clean heart create for me, O God;
renew within me a steadfast spirit.
Do not drive me from before your face,
nor take from me your holy spirit.
Restore to me the gladness of your salvation;
uphold me with a willing spirit.
I will teach the wicked your ways,
that sinners may return to you.
For you do not desire sacrifice
or would I give it;
a burnt offering you would not accept.
My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit;
a contrite, humbled heart, O God
you will not scorn.
Questions
1) What type of psalm is this one? A lament, a praise psalm or a wisdom psalm?
2.) Within the lament category, St. Augustine in the 5th century identified 7 psalms that he called “penitential” psalms, because the psalmist is confessing sin and asking God for forgiveness. Ps. 51 is the best example of the penitential psalms. What sacrament do we need when we want to be “washed clean” of sins we commit?
3.) Can you think of some ways that we do penance for our sins today?
4.) In ancient Israel, people offered animal sacrifices to God, especially when they had sinned. They thought that God would be less angry with them. Later God told them through the prophets that he was tired of their animal sacrifices. The
psalmist knows this. What type of “sacrifice” does God want?
5.) What is a “contrite spirit”? What is a “steadfast spirit”?
6.) What prayer do you know to express contrition?

¡Lávame totalmente de mi culpa y purifícame de mi pecado!
Porque yo reconozco mis faltas y mi pecado está siempre ante mí.
Contra ti, contra ti solo pequé e hice lo que es malo a tus ojos.
Por eso, será justa tu sentencia y tu juicio será irreprochable; yo soy culpable desde que nací; pecador me concibió mi madre.
Tú amas la sinceridad del corazón y me enseñas la sabiduría en mi interior.
Purifícame con el hisopo y quedaré limpio; lávame, y quedaré más blanco que la nieve.

Los sacrificios no te satisfacen; si ofrezco un holocausto, no lo aceptas: mi sacrificio es un espíritu contrito, tú no desprecias el corazón contrito y humillado.
Trata bien a Sión por tu bondad; reconstruye los muros de Jerusalén.
Entonces aceptarás los sacrificios rituales —las oblaciones y los holocaustos— y se ofrecerán novillos en tu altar.
Preguntas para la reflexión
1) ¿Qué tipo de salmo es éste? ¿Una lamentación, un salmo de alabanza o un salmo de sabiduría?
2.) Dentro de la categoría de las lamentaciones, San Agustín en el siglo V identificó 7 salmos que llamó salmos “penitenciales”, porque el salmista está confesando el pecado y pidiendo perdón a Dios. El Salmo 51 es el mejor ejemplo de los salmos penitenciales. ¿Qué sacramento necesitamos cuando queremos ser “lavados” de los pecados que cometemos?
3.) ¿Puedes pensar en algunas formas en que hacemos penitencia por nuestros pecados hoy?
4.) En el antiguo Israel, la gente ofrecía sacrificios de animales a Dios, especialmente cuando habían pecado. Pensaban que Dios estaría menos enojado con ellos. Más tarde Dios dijo a través de los profetas que estaba cansado de sus sacrificios de animales. El salmista lo sabe. ¿Qué tipo de “sacrificio” quiere Dios?
