“The LORD knows the way of the just.”
Passage
I
Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sit in company of scoffers.
Rather, the law of the LORD is his joy;
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted near streams of water;
that yields its fruit in season;
Its leaves never wither;
Whatever he does prospers.
II
But not so are the wicked, not so!
They are like chaff driven by the wind.
Therefore the wicked will not arise at the judgment,
nor will sinners in the assembly of the just.
Because the LORD knows the way of the just,
but the way of the wicked leads to ruin.
Questions
1. What type of psalm is Psalm 1? A lament, a hymn of praise or a wisdom psalm?
2. Whom does the psalmist want us to keep away from?
3. Wisdom sayings often begin with “Blessed is the man who…” or “Blessed are those who….”. We call them “beatitudes”. Who else taught beatitudes? Can you quote any of them?
4. A ‘scoffer” is a person who makes fun of other people or religious laws. Do you know anyone like that?
5. What is the “law of the LORD”?
6. This psalm, the 23rd Psalm (“The LORD is my shepherd…”) and Jesus in the Gospels all talk about streams of water and “living water”. Water is a very important symbol in the Bible. Why?
7. According to Psalm 1, wicked people end up in trouble. In what two ways?

¡Feliz el hombre que no sigue el consejo de los malvados, ni se detiene en el camino de los pecadores, ni se sienta en la reunión de los impíos, sino que se complace en la ley del Señor la medita de día y de noche!
Él es como un árbol plantado al borde de las aguas, que produce fruto a su debido tiempo, y cuyas hojas nunca se marchitan: todo lo que haga le saldrá bien.
No sucede así con los malvados: ellos son como paja que se lleva el viento.
Por eso, no triunfarán los malvados en el juicio, ni los pecadores en la asamblea de los justos; porque el Señor cuida el camino de los justos, pero el camino de los malvados termina mal.
Preguntas para reflexionar:
1. ¿Qué tipo de salmo es el Salmo 1? ¿Una lamentación, un himno de alabanza o un salmo de sabiduría?
2. ¿De quién quiere el salmista que nos mantengamos alejados?
3. María respondió al mensaje del ángel con una pregunta: “¿Cómo puede ser esto puesto que soy virgen? – Qué significaba ser virgen, dentro del contexto y la época de María? ¿Qué demuestra la pregunta de María?
4. Los dichos de la sabiduría a menudo comienzan con “Bendito el hombre que…” o “Benditos los que…”. Las llamamos “bienaventuranzas”. ¿Quién más enseñó bienaventuranzas? ¿Puedes citar a alguna de ellas?
5. ¿Qué es la “ley del Señor”?
6. Este salmo, el Salmo 23 (“El Señor es mi pastor…”) y Jesús en los Evangelios hablan todos de ríos de agua y “agua viva”. El agua es un símbolo muy importante en la Biblia. ¿Por qué?
7. De acuerdo con el Salmo 1, los malvados terminan mal. ¿De qué dos maneras?
