Passage

A. 2nd Samuel 7:1-17 Now when the king was settled in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan, “See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent.” Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that you have in mind; for the LORD is with you.”

But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan: Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the LORD: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?” Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to Me. When he commits iniquity, I will punish him with a rod such as mortals use, with blows inflicted by human beings. But I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before Me; your throne shall be established forever. In accordance with all these words and with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. (NRSV)

B. Psalm 89:1-4 I will sing of your steadfast love, O LORD, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations. I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to my servant David: ‘I will establish your descendants forever, and build your throne for all generations.'” (NRSV)

Questions

1) Q: Who was King David of Israel? A: There are many possible answers. He was the son of Jesse. He was a famous warrior, killing the giant Goliath with his slingshot. He was the greatest king of Israel. He was “a man after God’s own heart” (1Sam 13:14). He was the second king of Israel after King Saul. He ruled from 1000 to 960 BCE, at the beginning of the period of the United Monarchy. He was succeeded by his son King Solomon. In the first passage, David has succeeded in making his rule secure by conquering all the neighboring kingdoms and taking Jerusalem from the Jebusites and making it his capitol. He has even built himself a house. Q: What is the “ark of God”? A: A portable golden chest with two angels on top, containing the two stone tablets with the 10 commandments which God gave to Moses on Mt. Sinai. It was the locus of God’s holy presence for the Israelites. It had its own two room tent and traveled with the Israelites from place to place until King David brought it to Jerusalem.

2) Q: What does King David want to do with the Ark of the Covenant? A: Build a house or temple for it and for God’s presence. Q: But what does the LORD God tell the prophet Nathan that night? A: To tell David, “I will build you a house”. There is a play on the word “house” in this passage. Q: What kind of a house does David want to build for God? A: A real house of wood like he has. Q: When God says, “I will build you a house”, what kind of a house is He talking about? A: A royal “house” or a dynasty, an inherited kingship. (Example: Queen Elizabeth of England belongs to the House of Windsor.)

3) Q: According to God’s speech to Nathan, what had God already done for David? A: He had taken David from shepherding his father’s sheep to being prince over God’s people, He had been with David wherever he went and He had “cut off ” all David’s enemies. Q: What amazing promises does God make to David, through the prophet Nathan? A: He will raise up sons after him to be kings of Israel, in an eternal kingdom. David’s son will build a “house for My name”. His sons will be sons to God and God will be a father to them. David’s throne (or house) will be established forever! And God will not take His steadfast love away from David’s heirs. Q: Whaat is “iniquity”? A: Sin against God or one’s neighbor.. So God promised David If his sons sin against Him, He will punish them but not take the kingdom away from them.

4) Q: What word is missing from this first passage? A: Covenant. Q: How, then, can we speak of the Davidic covenant? A: The second passage from Ps 89 is based on the first passage from 2nd Samuel Ch. 7, and the psalmist quotes God as saying “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to my servant David.” Q: Is it a conditional or unconditional covenant? A: Unconditional. there are no commands, there is no oath, there is no sacrificial ritual. Q: Is there a sign of the covenant to David? A: Not expressly. Perhaps we could say that the temple/”house” that David’s son Solomon will build for God’s Name, is the sign of the Davidic covenant.

5) Q: This eternal covenant with David, promising a son to rule for all generations, how is it fulfilled for us believers today? A: In a Divine Son, Jesus Christ, son of David, son of God, Who rose from the dead in Jerusalem. And Who will come again. King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Natán respondió al rey: “Ve a hacer todo lo que tienes pensado, porque el Señor está contigo”.
Pero aquella misma noche, la palabra del Señor llegó a Natán en estos términos:
“Ve a decirle a mi servidor David: Así habla el Señor: ¿Eres tú el que me va a edificar una casa para que yo la habite?
Desde el día en que hice subir de Egipto a los israelitas hasta el día de hoy, nunca habité en una casa, sino que iba de un lado a otro, en una carpa que me servía de morada.
Y mientras caminaba entre los israelitas, ¿acaso le dije a uno solo de los jefes de Israel, a los que mandé apacentar a mi Pueblo: “¿Por qué no me han edificado una casa de cedro?”.

Seré un padre para él, y él será para mí un hijo. Si comete una falta, lo corregiré con varas y golpes, como lo hacen los hombres.
Pero mi fidelidad no se retirará de él, como se la retiré a Saúl, al que aparté de tu presencia.
Tu casa y tu reino durarán eternamente delante de mí, y su trono será estable para siempre”.
Natán comunicó a David toda esta visión y todas estas palabras.

B. Salmo 89:1-4
Cantaré eternamente el amor del Señor,
proclamaré tu fidelidad por todas las generaciones.
Porque tú has dicho: “Mi amor se mantendrá eternamente,
mi fidelidad está afianzada en el cielo.
Yo sellé una alianza con mi elegido,
hice este juramento a David, mi servidor:

1) P: ¿Quién fue el rey David de Israel?
R: Hay muchas respuestas posibles. Era hijo de Jesé. Fue un famoso guerrero que mató al gigante Goliat con su honda. Fue el mayor rey de Israel. Era “un hombre según el corazón de Dios” (1 Samuel 13:14). Fue el segundo rey de Israel después del rey Saúl. Gobernó desde el año 1000 hasta el 960 a.C., al principio del periodo de la Monarquía Unida. Le sucedió su hijo el rey Salomón. En el primer pasaje, David ha conseguido afianzar su dominio conquistando todos los reinos vecinos y arrebatando Jerusalén a los jebuseos y convirtiéndola en su capital. Incluso se construyó una casa.
P: ¿Qué es el “arca de Dios”?
R: Un cofre de oro portátil con dos ángeles encima, que contiene las dos tablas de piedra con los 10 mandamientos que Dios entregó a Moisés en el monte Sinaí. R: Una “casa” real o una dinastía, una realeza heredada. (Ejemplo: La reina Isabel de Inglaterra pertenece a la Casa de Windsor).

3) P: Según el discurso de Dios a Natán, ¿qué había hecho ya Dios por David?
R: Había llevado a David de pastorear las ovejas de su padre a ser príncipe del pueblo de Dios, había estado con David dondequiera que fuera y había “cortado” a todos los enemigos de David.
P: ¿Qué asombrosas promesas hace Dios a David, a través del profeta Natán?
R: Levantará hijos después de él para que sean reyes de Israel, en un reino eterno. El hijo de David construirá una “casa para mi nombre”. Sus hijos serán hijos de Dios y Dios será un padre para ellos. ¡El trono (o la casa) de David quedará establecido para siempre! Y Dios no quitará su amor firme a los herederos de David.
P: ¿Qué es “cometer una falta”?
R: Pecar contra Dios o contra el prójimo de uno… Así que Dios prometió a David que si sus hijos pecaban contra Él, los castigaría pero no les quitaría el reino.

4) P: ¿Qué palabra falta en este primer pasaje?
R: Alianza.
P: ¿Cómo podemos hablar entonces de la alianza davídica?
R: El segundo pasaje del Salmo 89 se basa en el primer pasaje del capítulo 7 de 2º Samuel, y el salmista cita a Dios diciendo: “Yo sellé una alianza con mi elegido, hice este juramento a David, mi servidor”.
P: ¿Es una alianza condicional o incondicional?
R: Incondicional. No hay mandatos, no hay juramento, no hay ritual de sacrificio.
P: ¿Existe un signo de la alianza para David?
R: No expresamente. Quizás podríamos decir que el templo / “casa” que el hijo de David, Salomón, construirá para el Nombre de Dios, es el signo de la alianza davídica.

5) P: Esta alianza eterna con David, que promete un hijo que gobernará por todas las generaciones, ¿cómo se cumple para nosotros los creyentes de hoy?
R: En un Hijo Divino, Jesucristo, hijo de David, hijo de Dios, que resucitó en Jerusalén. Y quien vendrá de nuevo. Rey de Reyes y Señor de Señores.
