Week Five: Our Father’s House

Verse to memorize

“In My Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” (Jn 14:2)

Passage

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house, there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to Myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you know Me, you will know My Father also. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him. (NRSV)

Meditation Questions:

1) In this passage from the Gospel of St. John, it is the night before Jesus died. He wanted to have one last supper with His disciples and to prepare them for life without Him. He knew they would be very sorrowful. So sitting at the table with them He said many things. His words are called the Last Supper Discourses. Speaking very tenderly to His disciples (and to us), He speaks about heaven.
Q: What does Jesus call heaven at the Last Supper? A: “My Father’s house”. Once again Jesus is using an image or a sign to represent the mystery of His kingdom.
Q: What is the symbol? A: A house. Not a physical house, but the household of God.
Q: What does He say is in His Father’s house? A: “Dwelling places”.
Q: What are dwelling places? A: Hard to say. The Greek is monai, from the verb monein, to dwell or abide. So places to stay. (Later at the Last Supper, Jesus will tell the disciples, “Abide in Me”.) And He says there are “many dwelling places”, so lots of room!

2) Q: What reason does Jesus give for leaving them? A: He goes “to prepare a place” for them (and us).
Q: What promise does He make to the disciples? A: “I will come again and take you to Myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.” Jesus wants the disciples and us to be with Him forever!
Q: And what do we call this promise to “come again”? A: The Second Coming of Christ.

3) Q: Does Thomas understand what Jesus is telling them in symbolic language? A: No. He is looking for a roadmap to a geographical location.
Q: What question does Thomas ask? A: “How can we know the way?”
Q: What amazing answer does Jesus give to Thomas? A: “I am the way, and the truth and the life.” In other words, Jesus makes a huge shift from the idea of a physical road “way” to relationship with Jesus—”I am the Way.” That’s why Jesus was able to tell the disciples a moment earlier, “You know the way to the place where I am going.” They know Jesus.

4) These words of Jesus are extraordinarily good news! “In my Father’s house there are many dwellings” and Jesus wants to bring us there forever!
Q: What is the only thing that the disciples and we have to do to get to heaven? Clue: Look at the first verse of the passage in John 14. A: “Believe in God, believe also in” Jesus!

Jesús le respondió: “Yo soy el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida. Nadie va al Padre, sino por mí.

Preguntas para reflexionar:

1) En este pasaje del Evangelio de san Juan, es la noche anterior a la muerte de Jesús. Quería tener una última cena con sus discípulos y prepararlos para la vida sin él. Sabía que se entristecerían mucho. Así que, sentado a la mesa con ellos, dijo muchas cosas. Sus palabras se denominan Los Discursos de la Última Cena. Hablando con mucha ternura a sus discípulos (y a nosotros), habla del cielo.
P: ¿Cómo llama Jesús al cielo en la Última Cena? R: “La Casa de mi Padre”. Una vez más, Jesús utiliza una imagen o un signo para representar el misterio de su reino.
P: ¿Qué es el símbolo? R: Una casa. No una casa física, sino la casa de Dios.
P: ¿Qué dice él que hay en la casa de su Padre? R: “Habitaciones”.
P: ¿Qué son las habitaciones? R: Es difícil decirlo. El griego es monai, del verbo monein, habitar o morar. Así que son lugares donde alojarse, donde permanecer. (Más tarde, en la Última Cena, Jesús dirá a los discípulos: “Permanezcan en mí”). Y Él dice que hay “muchas habitaciones”, así que ¡mucho espacio!

2) P: ¿Qué razón da Jesús para abandonarlos? R: Va “a prepararles un lugar” (para ellos y para nosotros).
P: ¿Qué promesa hace a los discípulos? R: “Volveré otra vez para llevarlos conmigo, a fin de que donde yo esté, estén también ustedes”. ¡Jesús quiere que los discípulos y nosotros estemos con Él para siempre!
P: ¿Y cómo llamamos a esta promesa de “volver otra vez”? R: La Segunda Venida de Cristo.

3) P: ¿Comprende Tomás lo que Jesús les dice en lenguaje simbólico? R: No. Busca una hoja de ruta hacia una ubicación geográfica.
P: ¿Qué pregunta hace Tomás? R: “¿Cómo vamos a conocer el camino?”.
P: ¿Qué sorprendente respuesta da Jesús a Tomás? R: “Yo soy el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida”. En otras palabras, Jesús hace un gran cambio, de la idea de un “camino” físico a la relación con Jesús: “Yo soy el Camino”. Por eso Jesús pudo decir a los discípulos un momento antes: “Ya conocen el camino del lugar adonde voy”. Ellos conocen a Jesús.

4) ¡Estas palabras de Jesús son una extraordinaria buena noticia! “En la casa de mi Padre hay muchas habitaciones” ¡y Jesús quiere llevarnos allí para siempre!
