Week Two: The Vision of an Unnamed Angel to the Prophet Daniel
Verse to be memorized: “Do not fear, greatly beloved…be strong and courageous.” Dan 10:19 (NRSV)
The Book of Daniel contains a collection of stories about a particular member of the Exile community, a young man named Daniel. He was a devout Jew who followed the statutes of the Law even in exile in pagan Babylon. He had attracted the attention of the kings of Babylon due to his ability to interpret dreams. He is famous for having survived being put in a lions’ den through his faith in the God of Israel. In Chapter 9, he has been fasting and praying for wisdom. Then in Chapter 10, Daniel is standing on the banks of the River Tigris and he sees ”a man clothed in linen”, with a “face like lightening”:
…My strength left me, and my complexion drew deathly pale, and I retained no strength. Then I heard the sound of his words; and when I heard the sound of his words, I fell into a trance, face to the ground.
But then a hand touched me and roused me to my hands and knees. He said to me, “Daniel, greatly beloved, pay attention to the words that I am going to speak to you. Stand on your feet, for I have now been sent to you.” So while he was speaking this word to me, I stood up trembling. He said to me, “Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words….And (I) have come to help you understand what is to happen to your people at the end of days.
….Again one in human form touched and strengthened me. He said, “Do not fear, greatly beloved, you are safe. Be strong and courageous!” (NRSV)
Meditation Questions:
1) The prophetic books of the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) are mostly written by the prophet himself. The Book of Daniel, however, is a book about the prophet Daniel. Q: Who is Daniel? A: A devout young Jewish man who was also deported to Babylon 600 years before Jesus. Though a foreigner he was chosen to work for the king of Babylon because of his skill in interpreting dreams. Q: What was he doing in Chapter 9 of the Book of Daniel? A: He had been fasting and praying to the Lord God of Israel for wisdom. Q: What is fasting? A: A humble spiritual practice or discipline where a person gives up food for a short time to make more room in his mind and heart for prayer,
2) Q: What does he see one day when he was standing by the River Tigris? A: He sees a “man with a “face like lightening”, “clothed in linen”. Where is the River Tigris? A: It runs roughly parallel (north to south) to the River Euphrates in Mesopotamia. Q: What was his reaction when he sees the man? A: He lost his strength and he fell to the ground in a trance. Q: What is a trance? A: A dazed or half-conscious state.
3) Q: What does the “man” in human form tell Daniel? A: “Stand up and pay attention. I have been sent to you.” Q: Who do you think the “man” is? A: Yes! An angel, because he said “I have been sent to you.” An angel is someone who is a messenger, someone sent. Q: Why has the angel been sent? A: Because of Daniel’s words, “your words have been heard.” Q: What does this mean for us? A: When we pray for good things, like wisdom, God hears our prayers!! A: What does the angel want to tell Daniel? A: What will happen to his people, the Jews, at the end of days, that is, at the end of the world.
4) Q: Each time that the angel touches Daniel, what happens? A: He regains his strength. Q: Why did Daniel fall to the ground and loose his strength? Was he afraid of something? A: No, this is that “holy fear”, that awe and wonderment before the mystery of God that we spoke about in the Introduction. It is good. Q: What is the angel’s message? A: “Do not fear, greatly beloved, you are safe. Be strong and courageous.”
Q: Can you think of a time when you or someone you know had to be strong and courageous?

Semana Dos: La visión de un ángel sin nombre al profeta Daniel (Daniel 10, 8cd-12 14abc 18-19ab)
Versículo para memorizar: “No temas, hombre predilecto… ¡Sé fuerte y valeroso!” (Dan 10, 19, Biblia “El libro del Pueblo de Dios”)
– El Libro de Daniel contiene una colección de historias sobre un miembro particular de la comunidad del Exilio, un joven llamado Daniel. Era un judío devoto que seguía los estatutos de la Ley incluso en el exilio en la Babilonia pagana. Había atraído la atención de los reyes de Babilonia debido a su capacidad para interpretar los sueños. Luego me dijo: “Daniel, hombre predilecto, fíjate en las palabras que voy a decirte, y ponte de pie en el lugar donde estás, porque ahora yo he sido enviado a ti”. Y mientras me decía estas palabras, yo me puse de pie, temblando.
Él me dijo: “No temas, Daniel, porque desde el primer día en que te empeñaste en comprender y en humillarte delante de tu Dios, fueron oídas tus palabras, y yo he venido a causa de ellas.
y vine para hacerte comprender lo que sucederá a tu pueblo en los días venideros, porque también esta es una visión para aquellos días”.
Aquel que parecía un hombre me volvió a tocar y me fortaleció.
Luego me dijo: “No temas, hombre predilecto. ¡La paz esté contigo! ¡Sé fuerte y valeroso!”.(Biblia “El libro del Pueblo de Dios”)
— Y el SEÑOR cumplió su promesa a los exiliados judíos. Cincuenta años después de ser deportados a Babilonia, Ciro el Grande de Persia vino y conquistó a los babilonios y permitió que los judíos regresaran a Judea y reconstruyeran su templo. Pero la idea de un viaje hacia el oeste a través del árido desierto era temible para ellos. Así que de nuevo Isaías profetizó a los exiliados:
Y ahora, así habla el Señor,
el que te creó, Jacob,
el que te formó, Israel:
No temas, porque yo te he redimido,
te he llamado por tu nombre, tú me perteneces.
Si cruzas por las aguas,
yo estaré contigo,
y los ríos no te anegarán;
si caminas por el fuego,
no te quemarás,
y las llamas no te abrasarán.
Porque yo soy el Señor, tu Dios,
el Santo de Israel, tu salvador.
Yo entregué a Egipto parta tu rescate,
a Cus y a Sebá a cambio de ti.
Porque tú eres de gran precio a mis ojos,

traeré a tu descendencia desde Oriente

1) Los libros proféticos del Antiguo Testamento (la Biblia hebrea) son en su mayoría escritos por el propio profeta. El Libro de Daniel, sin embargo, es un libro sobre el profeta Daniel. P: ¿Quién es Daniel? R: Un joven judío devoto que también fue deportado a Babilonia 600 años antes de Jesús. P: ¿Quién crees que es el “hombre”? R: ¡Sí! Un ángel, porque dijo: “He sido enviado a ti”. Un ángel es alguien que es un mensajero, alguien enviado. P: ¿Por qué le ha sido enviado el ángel? R: Debido a las palabras de Daniel, “fueron oídas tus palabras”. P: ¿Qué significa esto para nosotros? R: Cuando oramos por cosas buenas, como la sabiduría, ¡Dios escucha nuestras oraciones! R: ¿Qué le quiere decir el ángel a Daniel? R: ¿Qué pasará con su pueblo, los judíos, al final de los días, es decir, al final del mundo?
4) P: Cada vez que el ángel toca a Daniel, ¿qué sucede? R: Él recupera sus fuerzas. P: ¿Por qué Daniel cayó al suelo y perdió su fuerza? ¿Tenía miedo de algo? R: No, este es ese “santo temor”, ese asombro y maravilla ante el misterio de Dios del que hablamos en la Introducción. Es algo bueno. P: ¿Cuál es el mensaje del ángel? R: “No temas, hombre predilecto. ¡La paz esté contigo! ¡Sé fuerte y valeroso!”.
