Week Three: The Angel Gabriel Appears First to Mary and Then to Joseph
Verses to be memorized: “Here am I the servant of the LORD; let it be done to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38 (NRSV)
This week we have two very famous passages from the Gospels of St. Luke and St. Matthew concerning the birth of Jesus. Yes. We have meditated on Luke 1:26-38 three times before in other seasons of the Family Bible Challenge, and on Matthew 1:18-25 twice before. That is because these two exceedingly important passages focus our hearts and minds on the most important moment in the history of the world—the Incarnation of Our Lord, that is, the actual moment when God first became a tiny human like us through the “Yes” of another human, Mary. So many biblical themes come together in this passage we have to keep visiting it!!
Luke 1:26-38:
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you!” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name Him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; He will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
Matthew 1:18-25:
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When His mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.”
When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had born a son, and he named him Jesus. (NRSV)
Meditation Questions:
1) Q: What was the first thing the angel Gabriel said to Mary? A: “Greetings, favored one (or one full of grace), the Lord is with you.” Q: What is Mary’s reaction? A: She is perplexed or mystified and ponders what this could mean. Q: What was the second thing the angel Gabriel said to Mary? A: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Q: What else did the angel tell Mary? A: Six amazing things!!!!
Q: Can you name them? A: 1) She would conceive in her womb and bear a son. 2) She would name Him Jesus. 3) Her son would be great and would be called the “Son of the Most High”. 4) The LORD God would give Him the throne of His ancestor King David. 5) He would reign over the house of Jacob forever. 6) His kingdom would never end!
2) Q: How does Mary respond to all these amazing revelations? A: She responds with an intelligent question, “How can this be since I am a virgin (or since I have never been with a man)? Q: Was she afraid? A: Hard to tell, since she responds with an intelligent question, we know she was able to think. Q: How does the angel answer Mary’s question? A: Four more amazing things!!!! Q: Can you name them? A: 1) The Holy Spirit will come upon you. 2) The power of the Most high will overshadow you. 3) The child to be born will be holy. 4) He will be called Son of God. In other words, Mary will become pregnant not by the physical way but by a very great miracle of God! Q: What else does the angel tell her? A: That her cousin Elizabeth is six months pregnant in her old age, “for nothing is impossible for God.” Another miracle of God!
3) Q: How does Mary respond to the angel? A: “Here am I, the servant of the LORD; let it be done to me according to your word.” In other words, complete obedience. Q: In ancient Israel it was a public disgrace to be pregnant before marriage. Was she afraid? A: If she was, it is not in the Gospel. Instead, her response, “I am the servant of the LORD, let it be done…” shows us that her desire to obey the LORD is stronger than any fear. She trusts the LORD God. There is a saying, “Courage is fear that has said its prayers”. Mary was a person of prayer. She remembered the angel Gabriel’s command, “Do not be afraid, Mary.” At this point she does not even know what she will say to Joseph. She is ready to do a hard thing for God.
3) Q: When Joseph learned that his fiancée Mary was pregnant, what did he plan to do? A: He planned to divorce her quietly. Q; Why divorce her? A: So she could go perhaps and marry the father of her child and so avoid public disgrace. Q: What message does the angel give to Joseph in a dream in the Gospel of Matthew? A: “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife.” Q: What else did Gabriel tell Joseph? A: Three amazing things! Q: Can you name them? A: 1) The child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 2) She will bear a son. 3) You are to name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. (Jesus in Hebrew is Yeshua, which means one who saves). Q: What did Joseph do when he woke up? A: He obeyed God. He was not afraid to take Mary as his wife. And he named Him Jesus.

Semana Tres: El ángel Gabriel se aparece primero a María y luego a José (Lucas 1, 26-38; Mateo 1, 18-25)

Esta semana tenemos dos pasajes muy famosos de los evangelios de san Lucas y san Mateo sobre el nacimiento de Jesús. Sí. Hemos meditado en Lucas 1, 26-38 tres veces antes en otras temporadas del Desafío Bíblico Familiar, y en Mateo 1, 18-25 dos veces antes. Esto se debe a que estos dos pasajes extremadamente importantes centran nuestros corazones y mentes en el momento más importante de la historia del mundo: la Encarnación de Nuestro Señor, es decir, el momento real en que Dios se convirtió por primera vez en un pequeño ser humano como nosotros a través del “sí” de otro ser humano, María. ¡Tantos temas bíblicos se unen en este pasaje que tenemos que seguir visitándolo!
Lucas 1, 26-38:
En el sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea, llamada Nazaret,
a una virgen que estaba comprometida con un hombre perteneciente a la familia de David, llamado José. El nombre de la virgen era María.
El Ángel entró en su casa y la saludó, diciendo: “¡Alégrate!, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo”.
Al oír estas palabras, ella quedó desconcertada y se preguntaba qué podía significar ese saludo.
Pero el Ángel le dijo: “No temas, María, porque Dios te ha favorecido.
Concebirás y darás a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Jesús;
él será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo. El Señor Dios le dará el trono de David, su padre,
reinará sobre la casa de Jacob para siempre y su reino no tendrá fin”.
María dijo al Ángel: “¿Cómo puede ser eso, si yo no tengo relaciones con ningún hombre?”.
El Ángel le respondió: “El Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre ti y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra. Por eso el niño será Santo y será llamado Hijo de Dios.
También tu parienta Isabel concibió un hijo a pesar de su vejez, y la que era considerada estéril, ya se encuentra en su sexto mes,
porque no hay nada imposible para Dios”.
María dijo entonces: “Yo soy la servidora del Señor, que se cumpla en mí lo que has dicho”. Y el Ángel se alejó.
Mateo 1, 18-25:
Este fue el origen de Jesucristo: María, su madre, estaba comprometida con José y, cuando todavía no han vivido juntos, concibió un hijo por obra del Espíritu Santo.
José, su esposo, que era un hombre justo y no quería denunciarla públicamente, resolvió abandonarla en secreto.
Mientras pensaba en esto, el Angel del Señor se le apareció en sueños y le dijo: “José, hijo de David, no temas recibir a María, tu esposa, porque lo que ha sido engendrado en ella proviene del Espíritu Santo.
Ella dará a luz un hijo, a quien pondrás el nombre de Jesús, porque él salvará a su Pueblo de todos sus pecados”.
Todo esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que el Señor había anunciado por el Profeta: “La Virgen concebirá y dará a luz un hijo a quien pondrán el nombre de Emanuel”, que traducido significa: “Dios con nosotros”.
Al despertar, José hizo lo que el Angel del Señor le había ordenado: llevó a María a su casa, y sin que hubieran hecho vida en común, ella dio a luz un hijo, y él le puso el nombre de Jesús.

1) P: ¿Qué fue lo primero que el ángel Gabriel le dijo a María? R: “¡Alégrate!, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo”. P: ¿Cuál es la reacción de María? R: Ella está perpleja o desconcertada y reflexiona sobre lo que esto podría significar. P: ¿Qué fue lo segundo que el ángel Gabriel le dijo a María? R: “No temas, María, porque Dios te ha favorecido”. P: ¿Qué más le dijo el ángel a María? R: ¡¡¡¡Seis cosas asombrosas!!!!
P: ¿Puedes nombrarlas? R: 1) Ella concebiría en su vientre y daría a luz un hijo. 2) Ella lo nombraría Jesús. 3) Su hijo sería grande y sería llamado el “Hijo del Altísimo”. 4) El Señor Dios le daría el trono de su antepasado el rey David. 5) Él reinaría sobre la casa de Jacob para siempre. 6) ¡Su reino nunca terminaría!
2) P: ¿Cómo responde María a todas estas asombrosas revelaciones? R: Ella responde con una pregunta inteligente: “¿Cómo puede ser esto si soy virgen (o si nunca he estado con un hombre)?”. P: ¿Tenía miedo? R: Es difícil de decir, ya que ella responde con una pregunta inteligente, sabemos que fue capaz de pensar. P: ¿Cómo responde el ángel a la pregunta de María? R: ¡¡¡Cuatro cosas asombrosas más!!! P: ¿Puedes nombrarlas? R: 1) El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti. 2) El poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra. 3) El niño que nacerá será santo. 4) Él será llamado Hijo de Dios. En otras palabras, ¡María quedará embarazada no por la vía física, sino por un grandísimo milagro de Dios! P: ¿Qué más le dice el ángel? R: Que su prima Isabel está embarazada de seis meses en su vejez, “porque no hay nada imposible para Dios”. ¡Otro milagro de Dios!
3) P: ¿Cómo responde María al ángel? R: “Yo soy la servidora del Señor, que se cumpla en mí lo que has dicho”. En otras palabras, una obediencia completa. P: En el antiguo Israel era una vergüenza pública estar embarazada antes del matrimonio. ¿Tenía miedo? R: Si lo fue, no figura en el Evangelio. En cambio, su respuesta: “Yo soy la servidora del Señor, que se cumpla en mí…” nos muestra que su deseo de obedecer al Señor es más fuerte que cualquier temor. Ella confía en el Señor Dios. Hay un refrán que dice: “El valor es el miedo que ha dicho sus oraciones”. María era una persona de oración. Recordó la orden del ángel Gabriel: “No temas, María”. En ese momento ni siquiera sabe qué le dirá a José. Está dispuesta a hacer algo difícil por Dios.
4) P: Cuando José supo que su prometida María estaba embarazada, ¿qué pensó hacer? R: Planeaba divorciarse de ella discretamente. Q: ¿Por qué divorciarse de ella? R: Así podría ir tal vez a casarse con el padre de su hijo y evitar así la deshonra pública. P: ¿Qué mensaje da el ángel a José en sueños en el Evangelio de Mateo? R: “No temas recibir a María, tu esposa”. P: ¿Qué más le dijo Gabriel a José? R: ¡Tres cosas asombrosas! P: ¿Puedes nombrarlas? R: 1) El hijo concebido en ella procede del Espíritu Santo. 2) Ella dará a luz un hijo. 3) Tú le pondrás por nombre Jesús, porque él salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados. (Jesús en hebreo es “Yeshua”, que significa “el que salva”). P: ¿Qué hizo José cuando se despertó? R: Obedeció a Dios. No tuvo miedo de tomar a María por esposa. Y le puso por nombre Jesús.
