Week Six: The Last Supper – Jesus Speaks to the Apostles, John 14:1-3, 25-27

Verse to be memorized: “Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

—It is the night before the crucifixion. Jesus knows He is about to to be arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane and that this is the last time He will be with His disciples.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to Myself, so that where I am, there you may be also…

I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. (NRSV)

Meditation Questions:

1) In this passage of the Gospel of John we hear Our Lord speak in the most tender and loving way to His disciples. He has spent three years with them traveling and teaching all over Galilee and Judea. Now Jesus’ mission from the Father is done. Q: Do they know what is about to happen to Him? A: They can’t really understand, even though He has told them that he will suffer and die. Q: Why does He tell them, “Do not let your hearts be troubled”? A: He knows better than they that He is really going to die, and that they will no longer see Him as they have known Him in the flesh. He knows how sad and scared they will be without Him.

2) Q: What does Jesus mean when He speaks of “My Father’s house.”? A: He is talking about living forever and ever with God after we die, which we call “Heaven”. It is a metaphor; Heaven is “My Father’s house. Q: What does He tell the disciples at the Last Supper to do? A: “Believe in God, believe also in Me.” Q: What two promises does He make to them ? A: “ I go to prepare a place for you” and “I will come again and take you to Myself.” Q: Who else does Jesus prepare a place for? A: Us.

3) Q: Who will the Father send to the disciples after Jesus is gone? A: The Holy Spirit, whom He calls the Advocate. Q: What is the Holy Spirit’s job? A: To teach them everything and to remind them of all Jesus had said to them. Q: What does Jesus leave with them for after He is gone? A: His peace. Q: Can we have God’s peace? A: Yes. If we believe in Him, if we turn away from a screen, if we are still, if we close our eyes, if we breathe slowly, if we ask Him for it, we will feel it in our hearts.

4) Q: What command to the disciples does Jesus repeat? A: “Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” Notice that Jesus says this in the command form! “Do not let…” Q: What does this mean? A: That we have control over our hearts and minds. It means that we have the power from Him to not fear. Q: What is the opposite of fear? A: Faith and trust in God. And we can express this in prayer: “Jesus, I need you. Stay with me.”

Semana Seis: La Última Cena: Jesús habla a los Apóstoles (Juan 14, 1-3 25-27)

Versículo para memorizar: “¡No se inquieten ni teman!”.

— Es la noche anterior a la crucifixión. Jesús sabe que está a punto de ser detenido en el Huerto de Getsemaní y que es la última vez que estará con sus discípulos.

Preguntas para la meditación:

1) En este pasaje del Evangelio de Juan oímos a Nuestro Señor hablar de la manera más tierna y cariñosa a sus discípulos. Ha pasado tres años con ellos viajando y enseñando por toda Galilea y Judea. Ahora la misión de Jesús de parte del Padre está cumplida. P: ¿Saben lo que está a punto de sucederle? R: No pueden comprenderlo realmente, aunque él les haya dicho que sufrirá y morirá. P: ¿Por qué les dice: “No se inquieten”? R: Él sabe mejor que ellos que realmente va a morir, y que ya no le verán como le han conocido en la carne. Él sabe lo tristes y asustados que estarán sin él.

2) P: ¿Qué quiere decir Jesús cuando habla de “la casa de mi Padre”? R: Él habla de vivir para siempre jamás con Dios después de morir, lo que llamamos “Cielo”. Es una metáfora; el cielo es “la casa de mi Padre”. P: ¿Qué les dice a los discípulos en la Última Cena que hagan? R: “Crean en Dios y crean también en mí”. P: ¿Qué dos promesas les hace? R: “Yo voy a prepararles un lugar” y “Volveré otra vez para llevarlos conmigo”. P: ¿Para quién más prepara Jesús un lugar? R: Para nosotros.

3) P: ¿A quién enviará el Padre a los discípulos cuando Jesús se haya ido? R: El Espíritu Santo, a quien llama el Abogado. P: ¿Cuál es la obra del Espíritu Santo? R: Enseñarles todo y recordarles todo lo que Jesús les había dicho. P: ¿Qué les deja Jesús para después de su partida? R: Su paz. P: ¿Podemos tener la paz de Dios? R: Sí. Si creemos en él, si nos apartamos de una pantalla, si estamos quietos, si cerramos los ojos, si respiramos despacio, si se lo pedimos, lo sentiremos en el corazón.

4) P: ¿Qué mandato repite Jesús a los discípulos? R: “¡No se inquieten ni teman!”. Nótese que Jesús lo dice en forma de mandato. “No…”. P: ¿Qué significa esto? R: Que tenemos control sobre nuestros corazones y mentes. Significa que tenemos el poder de él para no temer. P: ¿Qué es lo opuesto al miedo? R: La fe y la confianza en Dios. Y podemos expresarlo en la oración: “Jesús, te necesito. Quédate conmigo”.
