Week Five: Jesus Walks on the Water, Mark 6:45-52

—This story takes place after Jesus had just multiplied the loaves and fishes for the crowd of 5,000.

Immediately (Jesus) made His disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd.  After saying farewell to them, He went up on the mountain to pray.

When evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and He was alone on the land.  When He saw that they were straining at the oars against an adverse wind, He came towards them early in the morning, walking on the sea.  He intended to pass them by.  But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw Him and were terrified.  But immediately He spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”  Then He got into the boat with them and the wind ceased.  And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened. Meditation Questions:

1)  Q:  Why did Jesus make the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side of the Sea of Galilee without Him?  A:  To spend time time alone in prayer to His Father.  In the Gospels, He always does this before or after an important event.  Q:  What happened in the evening when Jesus was alone on the land?  A:  Jesus saw that the disciples were straining at the oars against a hard wind.  Q:  What did Jesus do?  A: He came towards them walking on the sea. 

2)  Walking on the sea!!  We are used to hearing about Jesus’ miracles— healings, raising people from the dead, multiplying loaves and fishes, casting out of demons.  All these things He did in public purely out of love and compassion for the sufferings of the people.  Q:  So why is he walking on the water?  A:  More on this in a minute.  Q:  What is the disciples’ reaction when they see Jesus walking on the water?  A:  They thought it was a ghost and were terrified.  Q:  What did Jesus say to them?  A:  “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”  Q:  What happened when He got into the boat?  A:  The wind died stopped. Q:  Why were the disciples scared?  A:  They did not recognize Jesus.  They did not know He was with them. 

3)  Q:  So why did Jesus do the miracle of walking on the water?  A:  There are at least two answers:  1)  Jesus saw they were straining at their oars and in danger of being blown out to sea, so He came in rescue;   2)  Most of Jesus’ miracles were public revelations of His divine power because of his compassionate love. But here we have a private revelation of His divine power to only the disciples because “they did not understand  about the loaves”, that is, they did not understand who Jesus was, that He is divine, and that this power was available to them. In the Old Testament, this lack of understanding is called “hardness of heart”.  Jesus wanted them to know Him better so that later they can do what He does. 

4)  Q:  Are we in any way like the disciples of Jesus?  Do we believe in His loving compassion as well as in his divine power?  A: Ask Jesus to help you know Him, to love Him and to serve Him like good disciples, so He can share His power with you.  Q:  What do we call that power He shares?  A:  Grace.

Semana Cinco: Jesús camina sobre las aguas (Marcos 6, 45-52)

— Esta historia tiene lugar después de que Jesús acabara de multiplicar los panes y los peces para la multitud de 5,000 personas.

En seguida, Jesús obligó a sus discípulos a que subieran a la barca y lo precedieran en la otra orilla, hacia Betsaida, mientras él despedía a la multitud.

Una vez que los despidió, se retiró a la montaña para orar.

Al caer la tarde, la barca estaba en medio del mar y él permanecía solo en tierra.

Al ver que remaban muy penosamente, porque tenían viento en contra, cerca de la madrugada fue hacia ellos caminando sobre el mar, e hizo como si pasara de largo.

Ellos, al verlo caminar sobre el mar, pensaron que era un fantasma y se pusieron a gritar, porque todos lo habían visto y estaban sobresaltados. Pero él les habló enseguida y les dijo: “Tranquilícense, soy yo; no teman”.

Luego subió a la barca con ellos y el viento se calmó. Así llegaron al colmo de su estupor, porque no habían comprendido el milagro de los panes y su mente estaba enceguecida.

Preguntas para la meditación:

1)  P:  ¿Por qué hizo Jesús que los discípulos subieran a la barca y se adelantaran hasta la otra orilla del mar de Galilea sin él?  R:  Para pasar tiempo a solas en oración a su Padre.  En los Evangelios, siempre lo hace antes o después de un acontecimiento importante.  P:  ¿Qué ocurrió al anochecer, cuando Jesús estaba solo en la tierra?  R:  Jesús vio que los discípulos se esforzaban con los remos contra un fuerte viento.  P:  ¿Qué hizo Jesús?  R: Se acercó a ellos caminando sobre el mar. 

2) ¡¡¡Caminando sobre el mar!!!  Estamos acostumbrados a oír hablar de los milagros de Jesús: curaciones, resurrección de muertos, multiplicación de panes y peces, expulsión de demonios.  Todas estas cosas las hizo en público puramente por amor y compasión hacia los sufrimientos de la gente.  P:  Entonces, ¿por qué camina sobre el agua?  R:  Más sobre esto en un minuto.  P:  ¿Cuál es la reacción de los discípulos cuando ven a Jesús caminando sobre el agua?  R:  Pensaron que era un fantasma y se aterrorizaron.  P:  ¿Qué les dijo Jesús?  R:  “Tranquilícense, soy yo; no teman”.  P:  ¿Qué ocurrió cuando subió a la barca?  R:  El viento se detuvo. P:  ¿Por qué tenían miedo los discípulos?  R:  No reconocieron a Jesús.  No sabían que Él estaba con ellos. 

3)  P:  Entonces, ¿por qué hizo Jesús el milagro de caminar sobre el agua?  R:  Hay al menos dos respuestas:  1) Jesús vio que estaban tensando los remos y que corrían peligro de ser arrastrados mar adentro, así que vino a rescatarlos;   2) La mayoría de los milagros de Jesús fueron revelaciones públicas de su poder divino a causa de su amor compasivo. Pero aquí tenemos una revelación privada de su poder divino sólo a los discípulos porque “porque no habían comprendido el milagro de los panes”, es decir, no comprendían quién era Jesús, que es divino y que este poder estaba a su disposición. En el Antiguo Testamento, esta falta de comprensión se denomina “dureza de corazón”.  Jesús quería que le conocieran mejor para que después pudieran hacer lo que él hace. 

4)  P:  ¿Nos parecemos en algo a los discípulos de Jesús?  ¿Creemos tanto en su compasión amorosa como en su poder divino?  R: Pide a Jesús que te ayude a conocerle, a amarle y a servirle como buenos discípulos, para que pueda compartir Su poder contigo.  P:  ¿Cómo llamamos a ese poder que él comparte?  R:  La gracia.
