Week Three: The First Creation Story, Part Three: Genesis 1:24-31, 2:1-3

Verse to memorize

“So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Gen. 1:27)

Passage

And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our own likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”

So God created humankind in his image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” God said, “See I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to every thing that creeps on the earth, every thing that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. (NRSV)

Meditation Questions:

1) Q: Whom did God create on the sixth “day”? A: Cattle, wild animas and everything that creeps on the ground. Then finally He created humans. Q: What astounding truth about human is revealed here? A: That we are made in the “image of God”! We are made to reflect God to the world! Sometimes theologians liken this to the way the moon reflects the light of the sun. We don’t have light of our own; we are designed to reflect God’s light. Q: What is the next truth hidden here? A: That two genders, male and female, together reflect the image of God.

2) Q: After God created humans, what did He do? A: He blessed them and gave them a command. Q: What was the command? A: To “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” Q: What does that mean? A: To have children. So here is another truth of our faith: For a married couple, having children is both a blessing and a command from God.

3) Q: What other command did God give to humankind, male and female? A: “To subdue the earth and have dominion over the birds, the fish and every living thing… on the earth.” Q: What does “subdue” mean? A: To bring something under control. Q: What does it mean to have dominion? A: The English word “dominion” comes from the Latin dominus, meaning “lord”. So to have dominion means to have complete control over something. Q: How do we express this as a theological truth? A: God has given us control over all the earth. Psalm 8 expresses this truth so beautifully, “What are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them little lower that the angels….You have put all things under their feet.” Wow! God not only created us, He gave us the earth and everything in it! Q: What did God do to care for the animals as well? A: He gave them every green plant for food.

4) Q: In this first creation story what did God do on the seventh day? A: He rested. Q: Does God the Father need rest? A: No! He is a pure spirit, beyond all our imagining. But keep in mind that this is a teaching story, and a very ancient one. We know a lot more about God since Jesus. Q: Who does need rest? A: We do. Q: Can you find yet another truth here? A: God wants us to rest on His Day, ie. “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath.” Q: Which commandment is this? A: The third..

Dios dijo: “Que la tierra produzca toda clase de seres vivientes: ganado, reptiles y animales salvajes de toda especie”. Y así sucedió. Dios hizo las diversas clases de animales del campo, las diversas clases de ganado y todos los reptiles de la tierra, cualquiera sea su especie. Y Dios vio que esto era bueno.

Dios dijo: “Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen, según nuestra semejanza; y que le estén sometidos los peces del mar y las aves del cielo, el ganado, las fieras de la tierra, y todos los animales que se arrastran por el suelo”. Y a todas las fieras de la tierra, a todos los pájaros del cielo y a todos los vivientes que se arrastran por el suelo, les doy como alimento el pasto verde”. Y así sucedió. Dios miró todo lo que había hecho, y vio que era muy bueno. Así hubo una tarde y una mañana: este fue el sexto día.

Así fueron terminados el cielo y la tierra, y todos los seres que hay en ellos. El séptimo día, Dios concluyó la obra que había hecho, y cesó de hacer la obra que había emprendido. Dios bendijo el séptimo día y lo consagró, porque en él cesó de hacer la obra que había creado. Este fue el origen del cielo y de la tierra cuando fueron creados.

Preguntas para reflexionar:

1) P: ¿Qué creó Dios en el sexto “día”? R: Ganado, animales salvajes y todos los animales que se arrastran por el suelo. Finalmente creó a los seres humanos.
P: ¿Qué asombrosa verdad sobre el ser humano se revela aquí? R: ¡Que estamos hechos a “imagen de Dios”! ¡Estamos hechos para reflejar a Dios ante el mundo! A veces los teólogos lo comparan con la forma en que la luna refleja la luz del sol. No tenemos luz propia; hemos sido creados para reflejar la luz de Dios.
P: ¿Cuál es la siguiente verdad oculta aquí? R: Que los dos géneros, masculino y femenino, reflejan juntos la imagen de Dios.

2) P: Después de que Dios creara a los humanos, ¿qué hizo? R: Los bendijo y les dio un mandamiento.

3) P: ¿Qué otro mandamiento dio Dios a la humanidad, varón y mujer? R: “Someter la tierra y dominar a los peces del mar, a las aves del cielo y a todos los vivientes… sobre la tierra”.
P: ¿Qué significa “someter”? R: Poner algo bajo control.
P: ¿Qué significa “dominar” algo? R: La palabra en español “dominar” procede del latín dominare, que significa “tener bajo su poder”. Por tanto, dominar significa tener un control total sobre algo.
P: ¿Cómo expresamos esto como una verdad teológica? R: Dios nos ha dado el control sobre toda la tierra. El Salmo 8 expresa tan bellamente esta verdad: “¿qué es el hombre para que pienses en él, el ser humano para que lo cuides? Lo hiciste poco inferior a los ángeles… todo lo pusiste bajo sus pies”. ¡Guau! Dios no sólo nos creó, ¡nos dio la tierra y todo lo que hay en ella!
P: ¿Qué hizo Dios para cuidar también de los animales? R: Les dio de comer todas las plantas verdes.

4) P: En este primer relato de la creación, ¿qué hizo Dios el séptimo día? R: Descansó. P: ¿Dios Padre necesita descansar? R: ¡No! Es un espíritu puro, más allá de toda nuestra imaginación. Pero ten en cuenta que se trata de una historia de enseñanza, y muy antigua. Sabemos mucho más sobre Dios desde Jesús.
P: ¿Quién necesita descansar? R: Nosotros.
P: ¿Puedes encontrar aquí otra verdad? R: Dios quiere que descansemos en Su día, es decir, “Acuérdate del día sábado para santificarlo”.
P: ¿De qué mandamiento se trata? R: El tercero.
