Week #5 Reflection: Martha and Mary
Passage
As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. 42 There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” (Luke 10:38-42)
Questions
1. Imagine yourself as Martha in this scene. Describe what you think she has been preparing and doing to serve these guests in her house? How does she feel towards Mary? If you have siblings, have you ever felt the way that Martha feels?
2. Imagine yourself as Mary – what is she thinking? Why is she sitting at the feet of Jesus? What do you think she is doing? What might have been the conversation between Mary and Jesus?
3. What does Jesus mean when he says, “Mary has chosen the better part”? In Matthew 7:24, it says that we are to be hearers and doers of God’s word. Perhaps Martha is doing before she is “hearing” – in other words, she is serving, but from a place of duty and not of love and obedience. We are called to serve, but what is our reason for serving? Take time today as a family to sit at the feet of Jesus, and then serve Him out of love and gratitude for all He has done for you.

Marta, que muy estaba muy ocupada con los quehaceres de la casa, dijo a Jesús: «Señor, ¿no te importa que mi hermana me deje sola con todo el trabajo? Dile que me ayude». Pero el Señor le respondió: «Marta, Marta, te inquietas y te agitas por muchas cosas, y sin embargo, pocas cosas, o más bien, una sola es necesaria, María eligió la mejor parte, que no le será quitada». (Lucas 10:38-42)
Preguntas para reflexionar:
1. Ubicarte dentro de la escena de este pasaje como el personaje de Marta. ¿Qué era lo que ella preparaba para servirle a los invitados de su casa? ¿Qué tipo de relación y sentimientos tiene ella hacia su hermana María? ¿Si tienes hermanos, alguna vez has vivido ese mismo sentimiento hacia ellos?
2. ¿Ahora imagina que tú eres María, que pensaba ella en ese momento? ¿Por qué se sienta a los pies de Jesús? ¿Cuál crees que fue la conversación entre María y Jesús?
3. ¿Qué quiere decir Jesús al afirmar que “María escogió la mejor parte”? El Evangelio de San Mateo (Mt 7, 24) nos dice que debemos escuchar y actuar según la Palabra de Dios. Tal vez Marta se ocupaba en muchas cosas antes de “escuchar” – en otras palabras, servía, pero desde el sentido de la obligación o del deber, y no desde la perspectiva del amor y la obediencia. Dios nos llama a ser servidores, pero ¿cuál es la verdadera razón que motiva nuestro servicio? Separa hoy mismo un momento con tu familia, para sentarse juntos a los pies de Jesús, y para servirle “con amor y gratitud” por todo lo que El ha hecho por ti y por los tuyos.
