Week #4 Reflection: Mary
Verse to memorize
“There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the good part, the which shall not be taken from her.”
Passage
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” [And] Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. (John 2: 1-11)
Questions
1. The writer of this Gospel, St. John, begins the chapter stating that Mary was at the wedding and Jesus was “also” invited! What do you think it means that Mary seems to be highlighted in this way?
2. Why do you think Mary notices that they have run out of wine and why does she bring this need to Jesus?
3. Jesus’ response to his mother seems a little puzzling – what do you think it means? This is the first miracle that Jesus performs – it is the beginning of his public ministry – in between these words between mother and son is another “yes” from Mary – that she is ready to face the challenges that lie ahead for them. How do you think Mary feels as she gives her “yes” once again?
4. “Do whatever he tells you to do” – Mary is the first and perfect disciple – how can we “do whatever he tells us to do”? How can we give time and space in our lives to hear what He is saying, and trust Him so that we can do what he tells us to do, even if it is difficult? Are you ready to say “yes”?

Tres días después se celebraron unas bodas en Caná de Galilea, y la madre de Jesús estaba allí. Jesús también fue invitado con sus discípulos. Y como faltaba vino, la madre de Jesús le dijo: «No tienen vino». Jesús le respondió: «Mujer, ¿qué tenemos que ver nosotros? Mi hora no ha llegado todavía». Pero su madre dijo a los sirvientes: «Hagan todo lo que él les diga». Había allí seis tinajas de piedra destinadas a los ritos de purificación de los judíos, que contenían unos cien litros cada una. Jesús dijo a los sirvientes: «Llenen de agua estas tinajas». Y las llenaron hasta el borde. «Saquen ahora, agregó Jesús, y lleven al encargado del banquete». Así lo hicieron. El encargado probó el agua cambiada en vino y como ignoraba su o rigen, aunque lo sabían los sirvientes que habían sacado el agua, llamó al esposo y les dijo: «Siempre se sirve primero el bu en vino y cuando todos han bebido bien, se trae el de inferior calidad. Tú, en cambio, has guardado el buen vino hasta este momento». Este fue el primero de los signos de Jesús, y lo hizo en Caná de Galilea. Así manifestó su gloria, y sus discípulos creyeron en él. (Juan 2:1-11)
Preguntas para reflexionar:
1. El autor de este Evangelio, San Juan, inicia el capítulo describiendo que María estaba en la ceremonia de bodas, ¡y que Jesús también había sido invitado! ¿Por qué crees que María es destacada de esta manera en este pasaje?
2. ¿Qué piensas de que sea María quien nota que se ha acabado el vino, y por qué crees que le presenta esta necesidad a Jesús?
3. La respuesta de Jesús hacia su madre es algo desconcertante – ¿qué significado puede tener? Este es el primer milagro que Jesús hace – y es el comienzo de su ministerio público. Pero en medio de este intercambio entre madre e hijo se deja entrever otro “SI” de María: que si está dispuesta y lista para enfrentar los desafíos que vendrán. ¿Cómo crees que se siente María al entregarse con un “si” una vez más?
4. “Hagan lo que Él les diga” – María fue la primera discípula de Jesús. ¿Cómo podemos también hacer “lo que Él nos diga?” ¿De qué forma podemos sacar tiempo y espacio en nuestras vidas para escuchar lo que Él nos pide? ¿Para confiar plenamente en Él? ¿Para hacer lo que Él nos indica, así sea lo más difícil? ¿Estas preparado para decir “si” a nuestro Dios y Redentor?
