“Do whatever he tells you.”

Passage

[Queen Esther sends a message to her uncle Mordecai] “All the servants of the king and the people of his provinces know that any man or woman who goes to the king in the inner court without being summoned is subject to the same law—death. Only if the king extends the golden scepter will such a person live. Now as for me, I have not been summoned to the king for thirty days.”
When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, he had this reply brought to her: “Do not imagine that you are safe in the king’s palace, you alone of all the Jews. 14 Even if you now remain silent, relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another source; but you and your father’s house will perish. Who knows—perhaps it was for a time like this that you became queen?”
Esther sent back to Mordecai the response: “Go and assemble all the Jews who are in Susa; fast on my behalf, all of you, not eating or drinking night or day for three days. I and my maids will also fast in the same way. Thus prepared, I will go to the king, contrary to the law. If I perish, I perish!” Mordecai went away and did exactly as Esther had commanded.

Prayer of Esther. Queen Esther, seized with mortal anguish, fled to the Lord for refuge. Taking off her splendid garments, she put on garments of distress and mourning
Then she prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, saying: “My Lord, you alone are our King. Help me, who am alone and have no help but you, for I am taking my life in my hand. From birth, I have heard among my people that you, Lord, chose Israel from among all nations, and our ancestors from among all their forebears, as a lasting inheritance, and that you fulfilled all your promises to them. But now we have sinned in your sight, and you have delivered us into the hands of our enemies, because we worshiped their gods…
“Be mindful of us, Lord. Make yourself known in the time of our distress and give me courage, King of gods and Ruler of every power. Put in my mouth persuasive words in the presence of the lion… Save us by your power, and help me, who am alone and have no one but you, Lord…”
Esther Goes to Ahasuerus. On the third day, ending her prayers, she took off her prayer garments and arrayed herself in her splendid attire…She glowed with perfect beauty and her face was as joyous as it was lovely, though her heart was pounding with fear. She passed through all the portals till she stood before the king, who was seated on his royal throne, clothed in full robes of state, and covered with gold and precious stones, so that he inspired great awe. As he looked up in extreme anger, his features fiery and majestic, the queen staggered, turned pale and fainted… But God changed the king’s anger to gentleness. In great anxiety he sprang from his throne, held her in his arms until she recovered, and comforted her with reassuring words. “What is it, Esther?” he said to her. “I am your brother. Take courage! You shall not die; this order of ours applies only to our subjects. Come near!” Raising the golden scepter, he touched her neck with it, embraced her, and said, “Speak to me.”
She replied: “I saw you, my lord, as an angel of God, and my heart was shaken by fear of your majesty. For you are awesome, my lord, though your countenance is full of mercy.” As she said this, she fainted. The king was shaken and all his attendants tried to revive her. Questions

1. Esther’s uncle, Mordecai, helps Esther to see that she has been given the opportunity to speak to the king, “for such a time as this”, in order to save the Jews. Imagine you are Esther – how would you react to this prompting by her uncle, knowing that speaking to the king may end her life?

2. What is the first thing that Esther does after speaking to Mordecai? When faced with difficult decisions, where do you turn to receive direction and strength? Can you share with your family a time when you prayed for strength and were comforted? Why do you think she asks people to fast and fasts herself?

3. Esther says that the Jews have “sinned in Your sight…because we have worshiped other gods”. Although we may not worship the wooden gods of the pagans, what sorts of things do we mistakenly “worship” in today’s world?

4. Take time as a family to finish reading the incredible story of Esther and how she saved many lives. Because of Esther’s courage to lay down her life for her people, the Jewish people were saved. What gave her this courage? Where has God placed you right now in your life “for such a time as this”? Consider ways you can honor Him and give your “yes” to Him today.

Cuando informaron a Mardoqueo de lo que había dicho Ester, él mandó que le respondieran: «No te imagines que por estar en la casa del rey vas a ser la única en escapar con vida entre todos los judíos. No, si te quedas callada en este preciso momento, el alivio y la liberación les vendrán a los judíos de otra parte, mientras que tú y la casa de tu padre desaparecerán. ¡Quién sabe si no has llegado a ser reina precisamente para una ocasión como esta!».
Ester mandó responder a Mardoqueo: «Ve a reunir a todos los judíos que están en Susa, y ayunen por mí. No coman ni beban durante tres días, ni de día ni de noche. Yo, por mi parte, también ayunaré junto con mis servidoras. Así me presentaré al rey, por más que sea en contra de la ley. Y si es necesario que muera, moriré». Mardoqueo se retiró e hizo lo que Ester le había ordenado.

La reina Ester, presa de una angustia mortal, también buscó refugio en el Señor. Se despojó de sus vestidos lujosos y se puso ropa de aflicción y de duelo. En lugar de los perfumes refinados, se cubrió la cabeza de ceniza y basura. Mortificó su cuerpo duramente y dejó caer sus cabellos enmarañados sobre aquel cuerpo que antes se complacía en adornar. Luego oró al Señor, Dios de Israel, diciendo: «¡Señor mío, nuestro Rey, tú eres el Unico! Ven a socorrerme, porque estoy sola, no tengo otra ayuda fuera de ti y estoy expuesta al peligro. Yo aprendí desde mi infancia, en mi familia paterna, que tú, Señor, elegiste a Israel entre todos los pueblos, y a nuestros padres entre todos sus antepasados, para que fueran tu herencia eternamente. ¡Y tú has hecho por ellos lo que habías prometido! Ahora nosotros hemos pecado contra ti, y tú nos entregaste en manos de nuestros enemigos, porque hemos honrado a sus dioses… ¡Acuérdate, Señor, y manifiéstate en el momento de nuestra aflicción! Y a mí, dame valor, Rey de los dioses y Señor de todos los que tienen autoridad. Coloca en mis labios palabras armoniosas cuando me encuentre delante del león, y cámbiale el corazón para que deteste al que nos combate y acabe con él y con sus partidarios. ¡Líbranos de ellos con tu mano y ven a socorrerme, porque estoy sola, y no tengo a nadie fuera de ti, Señor!»

Al tercer día, una vez que terminó de orar, Ester se quitó su ropa de penitente y se atavió con todo lujo. Así, deslumbrante de hermosura, invocó a Dios que vela por todos y los salva. Luego tomó consigo a las dos damas de compañía. y se apoyó delicadamente sobre una de ellas, mientras la otra la seguía sosteniendo el ruedo de su vestido. Ella iba radiante, en el apogeo de su belleza, con el rostro sonriente como una enamorada, aunque su corazón estaba oprimido por el temor. Después de franquear todas las puertas, se detuvo delante del rey. El estaba sentado en su trono real, revestido con todos los atuendos de sus apariciones solemnes, cubierto de oro y piedras preciosas, e inspiraba un gran terror. Entonces alzó su rostro encendido de majestad y, en un arrebato de ira, lanzó una mirada fulminante. La reina se sintió desvanecer: débil como estaba, cambió de color y reclinó su cabeza sobre la dama de honor que la precedía. Pero Dios cambió el espíritu del rey y lo movió a la mansedumbre. Lleno de inquietud, se precipitó de su trono y la tomó entre sus brazos, mientras ella volvía en sí. La reconfortó con palabras tranquilizadoras, diciéndole: ¿Qué pasa, Ester? Yo soy tu hermano, ten confianza. No vas a morir, nuestro decreto vale solamente para la gente común. ¡Acércate!» Luego alzó el cetro de oro y lo puso sobre el cuello de Ester, la besó y le dijo: «Háblame». Ella le respondió: «Yo te vi, señor, como a un ángel de Dios, y mi corazón se estremeció de temor ante tu majestad. Porque tú eres admirable, señor, y tu rostro está lleno de fascinación». Pero mientras ella hablaba, se desvaneció a causa de su debilidad. El rey estaba desconcertado y todo su séquito trataba de reanimarla. (Ester: selección del capítulo 4)

Preguntas para reflexionar:

1. El tío de Ester, Mardoqueo, le hace ver que ella puede interceder por los suyos, ya que tiene la oportunidad de hablar con el Rey para tratar de salvar a los Judíos. ¿Si te imaginas que tú eres Ester – cómo reaccionarias a tal pedido de un tío o familiar, sabiendo que mencionarle este tema al Rey, podría poner tu vida en peligro?

2. ¿Qué es lo primero que Ester hace después de hablar con Mardoqueo? ¿Cuándo te enfrentas a situaciones difíciles, a quien buscas para recibir dirección y fortaleza? ¿Qué tal si compartes con tu familia acerca de una de esas ocasiones donde hayas orado mucho para pedir fortaleza y que hayas sido consolado? ¿Por qué crees que Ester pide a los suyos que ayunen y ella misma también lo hace?

3. A través de su oración, Ester le dice a Dios “pecamos contra ti…porque habíamos servido a otros Dioses.” Nosotros tal vez no adoramos a dioses de madera como los paganos, pero… ¿qué clase de cosas “adoramos” o endiosamos equivocadamente en nuestro mundo de hoy?

4. Toma algo de tiempo con tu familia y termina de leer la increíble historia de Ester, y la forma en que ella pudo ser instrumento para salvar a muchos. Fue por ese gran valor que ella tuvo de poner su vida en riego por los suyos que se salvó el pueblo Judío. ¿Qué pudo haberle dado a ella tanto valor? ¿En qué lugar te tiene Dios en tu vida, y como te ha puesto justamente donde debes estar? Busca formas en que puedas decirle un rotundo “Si” a Dios, y demostrarle gloria y honra por todo lo que ha hecho por ti. ¡Da ese si hoy mismo
