“Be mindful of us, O Lord.”

Passage

Then Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent out two spies from Shittim, saying, “Go, reconnoiter the land and Jericho.” When the two reached Jericho, they went into the house of a prostitute named Rahab, where they lodged. But a report was brought to the king of Jericho: “Some men came here last night, Israelites, to spy out the land.” So the king of Jericho sent Rahab the order, “Bring out the men who have come to you and entered your house, for they have come to spy out the entire land.” The woman had taken the two men and hidden them, so she said, “True, the men you speak of came to me, but I did not know where they came from. At dark, when it was time to close the gate, they left, and I do not know where they went. You will have to pursue them quickly to overtake them.” Now, she had led them to the roof, and hidden them among her stalks of flax spread out there. But the pursuers set out along the way to the fords of the Jordan. As soon as they had left to pursue them, the gate was shut.
Before the spies lay down, Rahab went up to them on the roof and said: “I know that the Lord has given you the land, that a dread of you has come upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land tremble with fear because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, whom you destroyed under the ban. We heard, and our hearts melted within us; everyone is utterly dispirited because of you, since the Lord, your God, is God in heaven above and on earth below. Now then, swear to me by the Lord that, since I am showing kindness to you, you in turn will show kindness to my family. Give me a reliable sign that you will allow my father and mother, brothers and sisters, and my whole family to live, and that you will deliver us from death.” “We pledge our lives for yours,” they answered her. “If you do not betray our mission, we will be faithful in showing kindness to you when the Lord gives us the land.” (Joshua 2:1-14)

Questions

1. Rahab chooses to hide the two spies and could have lost her life for lying. Why do you think she chooses to put her life on the line for theses spies?

2. What do you think makes both Rahab and the spies so certain of the power of God to take the city of Jericho? Look back at the passage to see what her testimony is about the God of the Israelites. How do you think she has heard about all that God had done?

3. Have you heard about the power, the trustworthiness, the love of God? Do you take the opportunity to remember His faithfulness and to share moments with friends and family when you have experienced the love of God? Take a moment with your family to share with each other times you have experienced His love, His presence. Then pray for the leading of the Holy Spirit in who needs to hear your testimony.

4. Did you take a moment last week to look up Matthew 1:5? Guess who is listed in the same verse? Rahab – a Canaanite woman who was leading a sinful life is listed in the genealogy as well. In fact, she was King David’s great grandmother! Consider this – there is nothing, no history, no sin, nothing that prevents us from coming to God, asking forgiveness, and being welcomed into His family! “Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future!” (Oscar Wilde)

Cuando se notificó al rey de Jericó que unos hombres israelitas habían llegado durante la noche para observar el terreno, mandó decir a Rajab: «Saca afuera a esos hombres que vinieron a verte, los que entraron en tu casa, porque han venido únicamente para observar todo el país». Pero la mujer tomó a los dos hombres, los escondió y declaró: «Es verdad que esos hombres vinieron aquí, pero yo no sabía de dónde eran. Se fueron al caer la noche, cuando estaban por cerrarse las puertas de la ciudad, y no sé adónde habrán ido. Salgan en seguida detrás de ellos, porque todavía pueden alcanzarlos». En realidad, los había hecho subir a la terraza, ocultándolos entre unos haces de lino extendidos allí. Entonces unos hombres salieron a perseguirlos en dirección al Jordán, hacia los vados; e inmediatamente después que los perseguidores salieron detrás de ellos, se cerraron las puertas de la ciudad.

El pacto entre Rajab y los espías Cuando Rajab subió a la terraza, donde estaban los espías, estos aún no se habían acostado. Ella les dijo: «Yo sé que el Señor les ha entregado este país, porque el terror que ustedes inspiran se ha apoderado de nosotros, y todos los habitantes han quedado espantados a la vista de ustedes. Nosotros hemos oído cómo el Señor secó las aguas del Mar Rojo cuando ustedes salían de Egipto, y cómo ustedes trataron a Sijón y a Og, los dos reyes amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán y que ustedes condenaron al exterminio. Al enterarnos de eso, nuestro corazón desfalleció, y ya no hay nadie que tenga ánimo para oponerles resistencia, porque el Señor, su Dios, es Dios allá arriba, en el cielo, y aquí abajo, en la tierra. Por eso, júrenme ahora mismo por el Señor, que así como yo los traté con bondad, ustedes tratarán de la misma manera a mi familia. Dénme una señal segura que dejarán con vida a mi padre, a mi madre, a mis hermanos y a mis hermanas, y a todo cuanto les pertenece, y que nos librarán de la muerte». Los hombres le respondieron: «Nosotros responderemos por ustedes con nuestra vida, con tal que no nos delates. Cuando el Señor nos entregue este país, te trataremos con bondad y lealtad». (Josue 2:1-14)

Preguntas para reflexionar:

1. Rahab decide esconder a los dos espías, y pudo haber perdido su vida en el proceso gracias a su mentira. ¿Por qué crees que ella escogió poner su vida en riesgo por aquellos espías?

2. ¿Qué crees es lo que hace sentir a Rahab y a los espías tan seguros del poder de Dios para llegar a conquistar la ciudad de Jericó? Repasa la lectura para que descubras su testimonio sobre el Dios de los Israelitas. ¿Piensas que ella había oído hablar de todo lo que Dios había hecho por Su pueblo?

3. ¿Haz oído hablar del poder, la integridad, y el amor de Dios? ¿Te das la oportunidad de recordar Su Fidelidad para con nosotros, y compartes esos momentos con tu familia y amigos cuando has experimentado el gran Amor de Dios en tu vida? Tómate ese momento ahora mismo y comparte con tu familia esos instantes donde hayas experimentado Su Amor y Su Presencia. Luego, ora y pídele al Espíritu Santo que te guíe hacia aquellos que necesiten oír tu testimonio.

4. ¿Te tomaste un momento la semana pasada para buscar el versículo de Mateo 1, 5? ¿Sabes quién más aparece en este versículo? Rahab – una mujer Cananea que llevaba una vida de pecado, pero también forma parte de la genealogía de Jesús. ¡De hecho, ella fue la bisabuela del Rey David! Considera lo siguiente – no hay nada, no hay historia, no hay pecado, NADA que evite que podamos acercarnos a Dios para buscar Su perdón y Su misericordia, para ser aceptado dentro de Su familia! “Cada santo tiene su pasado, y todo pecador tiene un futuro” (Oscar Wilde).
