Passage

Once back in the time of the judges there was a famine in the land; so a man from Bethlehem of Judah left home with his wife and two sons to reside on the plateau of Moab… Sometime after their arrival on the plateau of Moab, Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. They married Moabite women, one named Orpah, the other Ruth. When they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Chilion died also, and the woman was left with neither her two boys nor her husband.
She and her daughters-in-law then prepared to go back from the plateau of Moab because word had reached her there that the Lord had seen to his people’s needs and given them food. She and her two daughters-in-law left the place where they had been living. On the road back to the land of Judah, Naomi said to her daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you to your mother’s house. May the Lord show you the same kindness as you have shown to the deceased and to me. May the Lord guide each of you to find a husband and a home in which you will be at rest.” She kissed them good-bye, but they wept aloud, crying, “No! We will go back with you, to your people.” Naomi replied, “Go back, my daughters. Why come with me? … No, my daughters, my lot is too bitter for you, because the Lord has extended his hand against me.” Again they wept aloud; then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye, but Ruth clung to her.

“See now,” she said, “your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her god. Go back after your sister-in-law!” But Ruth said, “Do not press me to go back and abandon you!
Wherever you go I will go,
wherever you lodge I will lodge.
Your people shall be my people
and your God, my God.
Where you die I will die,
and there be buried.
May the Lord do thus to me, and more, if even death separates me from you!” Naomi then ceased to urge her, for she saw she was determined to go with her. (Ruth 1:1–18)

Questions

1. Ruth, a Moabite woman, married Naomi’s son who passed away. Now Naomi who has lost her husband and both of her sons is leaving to return from Moab to Judah, her home country. Imagine that you are Ruth – how do you think she feels at this moment as she considers whether to stay in her home country of Moab or go with Naomi?

2. Why do you think Ruth decides to leave Moab and stay with Naomi? How do you think Naomi has lived her life so that she has helped Ruth know God?

3. Have you ever had to make a decision to give up what is comfortable to choose something difficult? Talk about a time when you gave up comfort in order to support someone else. What was the outcome?

4. At the beginning of Matthew, there is a genealogy of Jesus. Guess whose name is listed? Ruth!! Ruth was a Moabite woman, who came to know God through Naomi and chose to stay with her. She has the great honor to be an ancestor of Jesus!! (Matthew 1:5)

Durante el tiempo de los Jueces hubo una gran sequía en el país, y un hombre de Belén de Judá emigró a los campos de Moab, con su mujer y sus dos hijos. El hombre se llamaba Elimélec, su esposa Noemí, y sus dos hijos, Majlón y Quilión: eran efrateos, de Belén de Judá. Una vez llegados a los campos de Moab, se establecieron allí. Al morir Elimélec, el esposo de Noemí, ella se quedó con sus hijos. Estos se casaron con mujeres moabitas –una se llamaba Orpá y la otra Rut– y así vivieron unos diez años. Pero también murieron Majlón y Quilión, y Noemí se quedó sola, sin hijos y sin esposo.

Entonces se decidió a volver junto con sus nueras, abandonando los campos de Moab, porque se enteró de que el Señor había visitado a su pueblo y le había proporcionado alimento. Así abandonó, en compañía de sus nueras, el país donde había vivido. Mientras regresaban al país de Judá, Noemí dijo a sus nueras: «Váyanse, vuelva cada una a la casa de su madre. ¡Que el Señor tenga misericordia de ustedes, como ustedes la tuvieron con mis hijos muertos y conmigo! Que el Señor les dé un lugar para vivir tranquilas, en compañía de un nuevo esposo». Y las besó. Pero ellas prorrumpieron en sollozos y le respondieron: «No, volveremos contigo a tu pueblo». Noemí insistió: «Regresen, hijas mías. ¿Por qué quieren venir conmigo? ¿Acaso tengo aún hijos en mi seno para que puedan ser sus esposos? Vuélvanse, hijas mías, vayan. Yo soy demasiado vieja para casarme. Y aunque dijera que todavía no perdí las esperanzas, que esta misma noche voy a unirme con un hombre, y que tendré hijos, ¿esperarían ustedes hasta que ellos se hagan grandes? ¿Dejarían por eso de casarse? No, hijas mías; mi suerte es más amarga que la de ustedes, porque la mano del Señor se ha desatado contra mí». Ellas volvieron a prorrumpir en sollozos, pero al fin Orpá despidió a su suegra con un beso, mientras que Rut se quedó a su lado.
Noemí le dijo: «Mira, tu cuñada regresa a su pueblo y a sus dioses; regresa tú también con ella». Pero Rut le respondió: «No insistas en que te abandone y me vuelva, porque yo iré adonde tú vayas y viviré donde tú vivas. Tu pueblo será mi pueblo y tu Dios será mi Dios. Moriré donde tú mueras y allí seré enterrada. Que el Señor me castigue más de lo debido, si logra separarme de ti algo que no sea la muerte». Al ver que Rut se obstinaba en ir con ella, Noemí dejó de insistir. (Ruth 1:1-18)

Preguntas para reflexionar:

1. Ruth, una mujer Moabita, se casó con el hijo de Noemí, pero él falleció un tiempo después de su unión. Noemí, quien perdió a su esposo y también a sus dos hijos en un corto tiempo, decide dejar la tierra de Moab para regresar a Judá, su tierra natal. Imagina que tú eres Ruth: ¿Cuales podrán ser sus sentimientos en esos momentos en los que tiene que decidir si quedarse en Moab o irse con su suegra Noemí hacia Judá?

2. ¿Por qué crees que Ruth se decide a dejar el pueblo de Moab y seguir a Noemí? ¿De qué forma crees que Noemí pudo ayudar a Ruth a conocer a Dios a través de su testimonio de vida?

3. ¿Alguna vez has tenido que tomar una decisión donde hayas tenido que dejar lo más fácil y cómodo, para escoger lo más difícil? Habla sobre alguna ocasión donde dejaste la comodidad a un lado, para podar apoyar a otra persona. ¿Cuál fue el resultado?

4. En el inicio del Evangelio de San Mateo, se encuentra la Genealogía de Jesús. ¿Adivina que nombre aparece en la lista? ¡El de Ruth! Ruth quien fuese una mujer Moabita, y quien conoce a Dios a través de Noemí al decidir quedarse con ella y seguir sus pasos. ¡Ella recibió el gran honor de quedar entre los antepasados de nuestro Señor Jesús! (Mateo 1, 5).
