“From you, Bethlehem…. shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel” (Mt 2:6)

Passage

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it has been written by the prophet: “And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.” (Micah 5:2,4)

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out, and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where he child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. (Mt 2:1-12)

Questions

1. In the ancient world near present day Iran, there was a tribe of learned men or seers who studied the constellations and movements of the stars. They were called “Magoi”. They congregated in the court of the Persian king. Imagine their astonishment, when they saw a new star. How did they interpret the meaning of the new star? Why did they follow the star from its rising?

2. King Herod was a cruel but powerful king of Palestine who was appointed by the Roman occupiers. He was not a descendent of the kings of Judah. Why does he want to find the new born king of the Jews? What vices does King Herod represent?

3. Mary countered the message of the angel with a question, “How can this be since I am a virgin?” What is a virgin? What does her question show?

4. Mary and Joseph “showed forth” (Greek: Epiphanythe Baby Jesus to the wise men. Imagine the story the wise men told back at the court of Persia. What news did they tell?

5. In what ways were the “wise men” wise?

6. Baby Jesus is God’s Son. God created the whole world. Who created the Star of Bethlehem?

7. Two groups came to worship Baby Jesus, the shepherds and the wise men. In what ways were they different? Why did God choose them? And why why did they choose to come? When God offers faith to someone, can they refuse?

Cuando nació Jesús, en Belén de Judea, bajo el reinado de Herodes, unos magos de Oriente se presentaron en Jerusalén y preguntaron: ¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que acaba de nacer? Porque vimos su estrella en Oriente y hemos venido a adorarlo. Al enterarse, el rey Herodes quedó desconcertado y con él toda Jerusalén Entonces reunió a todos los sumos sacerdotes y a los escribas del pueblo, para preguntarles en qué lugar debía nacer el Mesías. En Belén de Judea, –le respondieron–, porque así está escrito por el Profeta: “Y tú, Belén, tierra de Judá, ciertamente no eres la menor entre las principales ciudades de Judá, porque de ti surgirá un jefe que será el Pastor de mi pueblo, Israel”. Herodes mandó llamar secretamente a los magos y después de averiguar con precisión la fecha en que había aparecido la estrella, los envió a Belén, diciéndoles: Vayan e infórmense cuidadosamente acerca del niño, y cuando lo hayan encontrado, avísenme para que yo también vaya a rendirle homenaje. Después de oír al rey, ellos partieron. La estrella que habían visto en Oriente los precedía, hasta que se detuvo en el lugar donde estaba el niño. Cuando vieron la estrella se llenaron de alegría, y al entrar en la casa, encontraron al niño con María, su madre, y postrándose, le rindieron homenaje. Luego, abriendo sus cofres, le ofrecieron dones, oro, incienso y mirra. Y como recibieron en sueños la advertencia de no regresar al palacio de Herodes, volvieron a su tierra por otro camino.

Preguntas para reflexionar:

1. En el mundo antiguo, cerca del actual Irán, había una tribu de sabios o magos que estudiaban las constelaciones y los movimientos de las estrellas. Les llamaban “Magoi”. Ellos vivían en la corte del rey persa de la época . Imagínate su asombro cuando vieron una nueva estrella en el cielo. ¿Cómo interpretaron el significado de la nueva estrella? ¿Por qué siguieron a la estrella desde su ascenso?

2. El rey Herodes era un rey de Palestina, cruel pero poderoso, elegido por los Romanos. No era descendiente de los reyes de Judá. ¿Por qué Herodes se propone encontrar al recién nacido rey de los judíos? ¿Qué males del alma representa el rey Herodes?

3. Los Reyes Magos viajaron lejos llevando consigo regalos muy caros: oro, incienso y una especie rara utilizada como conservante. ¿Por qué le llevaron tales regalos a un bebé? ¿Cuáles de tus dones puedes ofrecerle hoy a Jesús?

4. María y José fueron instrumento para que el Niño Jesús se “apareciera” a los Reyes Magos – “La Epifanía del Niño Jesús” en Griego. Imagínate la historia que los Reyes Magos contaron al regresar a la corte de Persia. ¿Qué noticias llevaron?

5. ¿De qué maneras eran sabios los “Reyes Magos”?

6. El niño Jesús es el Hijo de Dios. Dios creó al mundo entero. ¿Quién creó la estrella de Belén?

7. Dos grupos fueron a adorar al Niño Jesús, los pastores y los Reyes Magos. ¿De qué maneras fueron diferentes? ¿Por qué Dios los eligió? ¿Y por qué ellos decidieron ir en adoración? Cuando Dios le da a alguien el regalo de la fe, ¿puede ese alguien negarse?
