Week #4 Reflection: The Annunciation to Shepherds & Their Visit
Verse to memorize
“Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.” (Lk 2:19)
Passage
In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see-I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth on earth peace among those whom he favors!” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told to them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had head and seen, as it had been told to them. (Luke 2:8-20)
Questions
1. The shepherds saw “the glory of the Lord shine around them” in fields at night! What did that look like? The angel told the shepherds not to be afraid. Gabriel said that to Mary also. Why? What did the angel announce to the shepherds?
2. In Hebrew Messiah means “anointed one”. In Israel kings were anointed. Faithful Jews were awaiting the Messiah. David was an anointed one or a messiah. Baby Jesus was of the lineage of David. Why was this important?
3. The angels announcement to the shepherds also called the child, Savior and Lord. The English language borrowed the name Jesus from Greek. The Hebrew for Jesus is Joshua, which means Savior in Hebrew. How much learning did shepherds get? Did they know what the words savior and messiah meant? When they saw the vision of many angels singing, how did they feel? What is the most unbelievable thing you have ever seen?
4. Why did the angel give them a sign to look for? Why did God send the angel chorus to shepherds instead of more important Jews? After the shepherds found Mary, Joseph and the child, what did they do next? How can you spread the good news of Jesus? The shepherds got to see the glory of the Lord”. Can you imagine what the glory of the lord would look like? When do you think we who are alive today will get to see the “glory of the Lord”?
5. Mary hears the reports of the shepherds and “ponders them in her heart” again. Do you ponder things?

En esa región acampaban unos pastores, que vigilaban por turno sus rebaños durante la noche. De pronto, se les apareció el Angel del Señor y la gloria del Señor los envolvió con su luz. Ellos sintieron un gran temor, pero el Angel les dijo: No teman, porque les traigo una buena noticia, una gran alegría para todo el pueblo: Hoy, en la ciudad de David, les ha nacido un Salvador, que es el Mesías, el Señor. Y esto les servirá de señal: encontrarán a un niño recién nacido envuelto en pañales y acostado en un pesebre. Y junto con el Angel, apareció de pronto una multitud del ejército celestial, que alababa a Dios, diciendo: ¡Gloria a Dios en las alturas, y en la tierra, paz a los hombres amados por él. Después que los ángeles volvieron al cielo, los pastores se decían unos a otros: Vayamos a Belén, y veamos lo que ha sucedido y que el Señor nos ha anunciado. Fueron rápidamente y encontraron a María, a José, y al recién nacido acostado en el pesebre. Al verlo, contaron lo que habían oído decir sobre este niño, y todos los que los escuchaban quedaron admirados de que decían los pastores. Mientras tanto, María conservaba estas cosas y las meditaba en su corazón. Y los pastores volvieron, alabando y glorificando a Dios por todo lo que habían visto y oído, conforme al anuncio que habían recibido.
Preguntas para reflexionar:
1. Los pastores vieron “la gloria del Señor brillar a su alrededor,” en los campos durante la noche. ¿Cómo se veía eso? El ángel les dijo a los pastores que no temieran. Gabriel le también le dijo lo mismo a la Virgen María. ¿Por qué? ¿Qué les anunció el ángel a los pastores?
2. En Hebreo, el Mesías significa “el ungido.” En Israel, por tradición, los reyes eran ungidos. Por eso los fieles Judíos seguían esperando ese Mesías. Según la historia, David fue uno de los ungidos de Dios, o un mesías. Y el niño Jesús era del linaje de David. ¿Por qué fue esto tan importante?
3. El anuncio de los ángeles a los pastores hizo referencia a un niño que sería el “Mesías y Salvador.” El idioma inglés tomó prestado el nombre de Jesús del Griego. El nombre de Jesús en Hebreo es Joshua, que significa “el Salvador.” ¿Que aprendieron los pastores? ¿Sabían lo que significaban las palabras Salvador y Mesías? Cuando experimentaron la visión de ángeles cantando en multitud, ¿cómo se pueden haber sentido? ¿Cuál es la experiencia más increíble que tu hayas visto?
4. ¿Por qué el ángel les pidió estar atentos a una señal? ¿Por qué Dios envió el coro de ángeles a los pastores en lugar de Judíos de más importancia? ¿Que hicieron los pastores después de encontrar a José, María, y el bebé? ¿Cómo puedes difundir las buenas nuevas de Jesús? Los pastores pudieron ver “la gloria del Señor”. ¿Te imaginas cómo sería la gloria del señor? ¿Crees que los que estamos vivos hoy veremos la “gloria del Señor,” y cuándo?
5. María escucha las palabras de los pastores y “las medita en su corazón” nuevamente. ¿Reflexionas y meditas a menudo sobre las cosas que te ocurren?
