Week #3 Reflection: The Birth of Jesus
Passage
In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. (Luke 2:1-7)
Questions
1. Who was the Emperor Augustus? Why did Joseph have to obey his decree?
2. Family genealogy mattered greatly to the Israelites. Joseph was of the tribe of Judah, and a descendent of David. Who was David? Why was he so important to the story of the birth of Jesus?
3. Mary and Joseph were not married yet. Mary was expecting. What do you think the neighbors said? Was it true? Do you believe gossip?
4. Do you know what a ‘manger’ is? If not, look it up on your parents cell phone. What does this tell us about the place where Mary had to give birth? Imagine the scene. Does Joseph have a lantern? Can he make a place to lie down for Mary? What does it smell like? What does this passage not tell us about the scene?
5. What are Mary and Joseph feeling before the birth of Jesus? What are they feeling after Jesus is born? Have you had a new baby in your family?

5. ¿Qué sienten María y José antes del nacimiento de Jesús? ¿Qué sienten después de que Jesús nace? ¿Hay un bebé recién nacido en tu familia?
