Week #2 Reflection: The Annunciation to Joseph

En Español

Verse to memorize

“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.” (Isaiah 7:14)

Passage

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us”. When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son, and he named him Jesus. (Matthew 1:18-25)

Questions

1. Did you know that there were two annunciations, one to Mary and one to Joseph? Why do you think God sent an angel to both of them?

2. According to the Jewish law, marital relations before marriage was a capital crime punishable by stoning. When Joseph found out Mary was expecting, he no longer planned to marry her, but rather to dismiss or put her away somewhere quietly. What does this say about Joseph’s character?

3. “An angel of the Lord” appeared to him in a dream. There are all sorts of dreams that happen to people, some very muddled, confused or scary. But can God use our dreams? Have you ever heard of someone who received an important message in a dream?

4. What advice does the angel give to Joseph? Is it the same or different from the message of the angel Gabriel to Mary? Why does the angel say that Joseph is to name Mary’s son Jesus? (footnote: Jesus came into English from the Greek; Jesus in Hebrew is Yeshu’a which means, the one who saves.)

5. The angel quotes the prophet Isaiah. Joseph would have known this prophecy about Emanuel. How do you think he felt when he awoke? Why does the evangelist Matthew tell us that Mary and Joseph had no marital relations?

6. Joseph obeyed the angel. What kind of a man was he? Why did God choose him to be the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus?
