Week #1 Reflection: The Annunciation to Mary
Verse to memorize
“For nothing will be impossible with God.” (NRSV-Luke 1:37)
Passage
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord, let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her. (Luke 1: 26-38)
Questions
1. Angels (the word means ‘messenger’ in Hebrew and Greek) appear in virtually every book of the Bible. Do you believe that God has messengers? Mary was greatly perplexed or surprised. Can you think of a surprising incident when someone was an “angel” to you? Angels in the Bible always bring a message. Have you ever received an important message that was personal to you and helpful?
2. Mary pondered” the words of the angel. What does it mean to ‘ponder’ something? Did she understand what was happening? In a difficult situation, what is the opposite of ‘pondering’? In your life can you think of a situation where you needed to ponder? How does it help us?
3. Mary countered the message of the angel with a question, “How can this be since I am a virgin?” What is a virgin? What does her question show?
4. The angel explains to Mary that the Holy Spirit and the power of the Most High will be the instruments of her pregnancy. One of the names of the God of Israel in the Hebrew Scriptures was El Elyon or God Most High. Mary would have known this Hebrew name. For Christians, this is God the Father. When Mary says, “Let it be done”, what happened? At that moment, God the Father, God the Holy Spirit and Jesus are all present in Mary. What do we call these three persons in one God? What do we call the miraculous event happening in her womb? Did God get her permission first?
5. When Mary said, “Let it be done to me” or “Let it be with me”, what do you think she felt? Which virtues do you think she represents at this moment? Can you think of a time when you accepted a challenge by faith in spite of your fears?

También tu parienta Isabel concibió un hijo a pesar de su vejez, y la que era considerada estéril, ya se encuentra en su sexto mes, porque no hay nada imposible para Dios. María dijo entonces: “Yo soy la servidora del Señor, que se cumpla en mí lo que has dicho.” Y el Angel se alejó. (Lucas 1: 26-38)
Preguntas para reflexionar:
1. Los ángeles aparecen en casi todos los libros de la Santa Biblia (la palabra quiere decir “mensajero” en Hebreo y Griego.) ¿Crees que Dios tiene sus propios “mensajeros”? La Virgen María fue sorprendida y quedó perpleja con la visita del ángel Gabriel. ¿Has llegado a tener alguna situación inesperada a través de la cual alguien se haya comportado como un “ángel” para ti? Los ángeles en las Sagradas Escrituras siempre llegan con un mensaje importante. ¿Te han dado a ti algún mensaje que haya sido personal y de gran ayuda para tu vida?
2. La Virgen María “reflexionó” sobre las palabras del ángel. ¿Qué significa “reflexionar” para ti? ¿Entendía ella lo que le estaba pasando? En una situación difícil, ¿qué es lo contrario de “reflexionar”? En tu vida, ¿cuáles son las situaciones que te han llevado a reflexionar?
3. María respondió al mensaje del ángel con una pregunta: “¿Cómo puede ser esto puesto que soy virgen? – Qué significaba ser virgen, dentro del contexto y la época de María? ¿Qué demuestra la pregunta de María?
4. El ángel le explica a María que el Espíritu Santo y el poder del Altísimo serán los instrumentos para que su embarazo se realice. Uno de los nombres del Dios de Israel en las Escrituras Hebreas era “El Elyon” que significa Dios Altísimo. María seguramente conocía ese nombre Hebreo. Para los cristianos, es Dios el Padre. Cuando María dice: “Hágase en mi según tu palabra” – como cambia la historia de la humanidad? Desde ese momento, Dios el Padre, Dios el Espíritu Santo, y Jesús, están todos presentes en María. ¿Cómo llamamos a éstas tres personas en un solo Dios? ¿Cómo llamamos el evento milagroso que ocurre en su útero? ¿Dios contó primero con su aprobación?
5. Cuando María respondió: “Que Dios haga conmigo lo que me has dicho” – cómo crees que ella se sentía en ese instante? ¿Qué virtudes representa la Santísima Virgen en ese momento? ¿Recuerdas alguna ocasión de tu vida en la que aceptaste un gran reto o desafío, con toda tu fe, a pesar de tus miedos?
