Week #4 Reflection: Jesus is the Bread of Life

Verse to be memorized:Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life..
In the New Testament, after Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes to feed the multitude who were following him, some people followed Him around the Sea of Galilee wanting to see another sign (miracle). They argued that Moses had given them manna in the wilderness. Jesus reminded them that it was not Moses who gave them “bread from heaven”, but “My Father in heaven who gives you the true bread from heaven and gives life to the world….They said to Him, ’Sir, give us this bread always.”

Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life…….Very truly I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die… Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.

The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you,, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink…

When many of His disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?”…….Because of this many of His disciples turned back and no longer went about with Him. So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” (NRSV)

Meditation Questions:
1) This famous passage from the Gospel of St. John is called the Bread of Life Discourse, because Jesus calls Himself the Bread of Life. Q: What had happened right before Jesus said that? A: Jesus had multiplied the loaves and fishes. Q: What did the people do after that miracle? A: The people followed Him looking for another miracle. Q: Why did the people ask Jesus to “Give us this bread always”? A: Because Jesus had just told them that it is God the Father “who gives you the true bread from heaven.”

2) Q: What did Jesus call Himself? A: The Bread of Life. Q: What happened to the ancestors of the Jews who ate the “manna” from heaven in the wilderness. A: They died. Q: What kind of “bread” does Jesus want to give them? A: His own body in the form of bread. Jesus is making a connection between the “manna”/bread God gave to them on the Exodus journey to the Promised Land, and His body/“bread” which He would soon give to them at the Last Supper. Q: What would people gain by believing in Him and eating His “body”/bread? A: Eternal life; both spiritual life in this world and eternal life in heaven; as well as resurrection from the dead “on the last day”. Q: What does Jesus mean by “the last day”. A: The end of the world, when Jesus returns.

3) But the Last Supper, when Jesus will say, “This is My body” and the crucifixion where Jesus will really die in His body, haven’t happened yet in this passage from the Gospel of John. Can the people understand what He is saying? A: No, not at all! Q: So why does Jesus tell them this? A: So that after His death, they will remember His words and then they will understand. That’s why Jesus asked them to believe.

4) Q: Also present in this scene were some Jews who argued among themselves, the meaning of Jesus’ words. What does Jesus say to them? A: “Unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you will have no life in you.” Q: Who is the “Son of Man”? A name Jesus took from a vision that the Old Testament prophet Dan saw of heaven and applied it to Himself, to hint that He is the Messiah.

5) Q: What was the reaction of many of Jesus’ disciples on hearing that they should eat the flesh and drink the blood of Jesus? A: They turned away and no longer followed Jesus. Q: After that, what question did Jesus ask the twelve apostles? A: If they also wished to go away. Q: What was the answer St. Peter gave Jesus? A: “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” Q: When we receive the “Body of Christ” in the Eucharist at Mass, whom are we receiving? A: The Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Through faith, we receive His Life in us. The Eucharist is all about Life—right now and after we die.

6) Q: Do you remember the Covenant ritual performed by Moses at Mt. Sinai which we read in Week Two of the FBC? The sacrificial offering to God was the roasted oxen. What did the Israelites do with all the roasted meat? A: A portion was completely burned (a holocaust) as the offering to God rising as smoke to heaven, a special portion was given to the priests and their families to eat, and the rest was distributed among the Israelites as their food. They had a feast! They ate the sacrificial offering! Q: What does this remind you of? A: Yes! In the Eucharist, we “eat” the Body of Christ and (before COVID restrictions) we “drink” His blood. In advance of His death, Jesus turned the sacrifice He was about to made for us on the Cross into a covenant sacrifice, binding us to Him.

Semana Cuatro: Jesús es el Pan de Vida

Versículo para memorizar: “Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de Vida eterna” (Biblia “El libro del Pueblo de Dios”).

En el Nuevo Testamento, después de que Jesús multiplicara los panes y los peces para alimentar a la multitud que lo seguía, algunas personas lo siguieron hacia el mar de Galilea queriendo ver otra señal (milagro). Argumentaron que Moisés les había dado maná en el desierto. Jesús les respondió: “Yo soy el pan de Vida. El que viene a mí jamás tendrá hambre; el que cree en mí jamás tendrá sed. Les aseguro que el que cree, tiene Vida eterna. Yo soy el pan de Vida. Sus padres, en el desierto, comieron el maná y murieron. Pero este es el pan que desciende del cielo, para que aquel que lo coma no muera. Yo soy el pan vivo bajado del cielo. El que coma de este pan vivirá eternamente, y el pan que yo daré es mi carne para la Vida del mundo”. Los judíos discutían entre sí, diciendo: “¿Cómo este hombre puede darnos a comer su carne?”. Jesús les respondió: “Les aseguro que si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y no beben su sangre, no tendrán Vida en ustedes. El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre tiene Vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el último día. Porque mi carne es la verdadera comida y mi sangre, la verdadera bebida.

Después de oírlo, muchos de sus discípulos decían: “¡Es duro este lenguaje! ¿Quién puede escucharlo?”.

Desde ese momento, muchos de sus discípulos se alejaron de él y dejaron de acompañarlo. Jesús preguntó entonces a los Doce: “¿También ustedes quieren irse?”. Simón Pedro le respondió: “Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de Vida eterna. Nosotros hemos creído y sabemos que eres el Santo de Dios”.

Preguntas para meditar:
1) Este famoso pasaje del Evangelio de san Juan se llama el Discurso del Pan de Vida, porque Jesús se llama a sí mismo el Pan de Vida. P: ¿Qué había sucedido justo antes de que Jesús dijera eso? R: Jesús había multiplicado los panes y los peces. P: ¿Qué hizo la gente luego de aquel milagro? R: La gente lo siguió en busca de otro milagro. P: ¿Por qué la gente le pidió a Jesús: “Danos siempre de ese pan”? R: Porque Jesús acababa de decirles que es Dios Padre quien “les da el verdadero pan del cielo”.

2) P: ¿Cómo se llamó Jesús a sí mismo? R: El Pan de Vida. P: ¿Qué les sucedió a los antepasados de los judíos que comieron el “maná” del cielo en el desierto? R: Murieron. P: ¿Qué tipo de “pan” quiere darles Jesús? R: Su propio cuerpo en forma de pan. Jesús estaba haciendo una conexión entre el “maná”/pan que Dios les dio en el camino del Éxodo a la Tierra Prometida, y Su cuerpo/”pan” que pronto les daría en la Última Cena. P: ¿Qué obtendrían las personas al creer en Él y comer de su “cuerpo”/pan? R: La vida eterna; tanto la vida espiritual en este mundo como la vida eterna en el cielo; así como la resurrección de entre los muertos “en el último día”. P: ¿Qué quiere decir Jesús con “el último día”? R: El fin del mundo, cuando Jesús regrese.

3) Sin embargo, en la Última Cena, cuando Jesús dijo: “Esto es mi cuerpo” y la crucifixión, es decir, el momento en que Jesús realmente muere con su cuerpo, aún no había ocurrido en el relato del Evangelio de Juan. ¿Puede la gente entender lo que dice? R: ¡No, para nada! P: Entonces, ¿por qué les dice esto Jesús? R: Para que después de su muerte, recuerden Sus palabras y entonces las entiendan. Por eso Jesús les pidió que creyeran.

4) P: También estaban presentes en esta escena algunos judíos que discutían entre sí el significado de las palabras de Jesús. ¿Qué les dice Jesús? R: “Les aseguro que si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y no beben su sangre, no tendrán Vida en ustedes”. P: ¿Quién es el “Hijo del hombre”? Un nombre que Jesús tomó de una visión que el profeta del Antiguo Testamento, Daniel, tuvo del cielo, y lo aplicó a sí mismo, para insinuar que él es el Mesías.

5) P: ¿Cuál fue la reacción de muchos de los discípulos de Jesús al oír que debían comer la carne y beber la sangre de Jesús? R: Se apartaron y dejaron de seguirlo. P: Después de eso, ¿qué pregunta les hizo Jesús a los doce apóstoles? R: Si ellos también deseaban irse. P: ¿Cuál fue la respuesta que san Pedro dio a Jesús? R: “Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de la Vida eterna. Nosotros hemos creído y sabemos que eres el Santo de Dios”. P: Cuando recibimos el “Cuerpo de Cristo” en la Eucaristía durante la Misa, ¿a quién estamos recibiendo? R: A la Presencia Real de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Por la fe, recibimos Su Vida en nosotros. La Eucaristía es Vida: ahora y después de nuestra muerte.

6) P: ¿Recuerdas el ritual de la Alianza realizado por Moisés en la montaña del Sinaí que leímos en la segunda semana del Desafío Bíblico Familiar? La ofrenda sacrificial a Dios eran novillos asados. ¿Qué hicieron los israelitas con toda la carne asada? R: Una parte se quemó completamente (haciendo un holocausto) como ofrenda a Dios que subió como humo al cielo, otra parte especial se dio a los sacerdotes y a sus familias para comer, y el resto se distribuyó entre los israelitas como alimento. ¡Tuvieron un festín! ¡Ellos comieron la ofrenda del sacrificio! P: ¿A qué te recuerda esto? R: ¡Sí! En la Eucaristía, “comemos” el Cuerpo de Cristo y (antes de las restricciones del COVID) “bebemos” Su sangre. Jesús, antes de su muerte, convirtió el sacrificio que iba a hacer por nosotros en la Cruz en un sacrificio de alianza, uniéndonos a Él.
